Corsets

I really like the look of the corsets and cinchers from Artifice Clothing even though only a couple of them are made for actual waist training. Sorry, but I'm a sucker for costume and theater. ;P

I thought a visual aid might help explain the differences between corsets.

This is a corset top, made by Hell Bunny and sold by Hot Topic. You'll notice that this is basically not doing any shaping, it's pretty much what the girl looks like. There is no boning really.

This is a "lite" corset. It shapes you a little bit, but it's not meant for long-term wear. It's something you put on to look sexy, and it will probably come off before having sex. It has plastic boning. This is from Frederick's of Hollywood.

This is what I refer to as a "real" corset, I know that sounds elitist, but it's the only thing I can think of. Notice that the woman's body shape is VERY different from normal. The boning is steel. This is the type of corset that was commonly worn until the early 1900s. It's by Dark Garden.

Corsets can also do this. I put it as a link because it can be ever so slightly alarming. It's an 18" waist with a 6" pipestem, made by C&S Constructions.

If you love them, get one, I'd use meschantes. Have a non-crap boudoir photographer shoot you.

He will not think it "not worth it" and neither will you.

No, not including the link. I haven't been trained in how to properly bone/fit/measure for a corset that will do what that link did. I don't feel comfortable selling my stuff as for body mod like those corsets are. Not until I'm properly trained.

*giggles* When ever I find a paying mentor. Perferably one I don't have to move out of state for.

I lace mine quite tight, and they hold up for years. (my last one the busk broke, it got mixed into the laundry and the next wear, snap). They are very sturdy and done with steel bone (2 at each seam and another place or two) I just don't feel comfortable claiming that they are tight lacing until I know everything there is to know about such garments.

Oh, by the way, how do you take care of your corsets? I mean, do you store them in special cases or just hang them? And how do you wash them? Since there's steel in them I'm guessing you have to be much more careful?

damn. Most of mine are around the second one.. the third impresses me, the link.. that's a bit much, even for me.

I'm wondering though, whether the one in that link and similiar really tight lacing would cause damage to internals?

Damage isn't the right word for it, I think. One doesn't just wear something like that in a month's time - you have to get the waist down to the diameter, and then slowly increase the stem - stretching the pipestem that far should take more than a year if done safely.

It's not really damage. It's repositioning. Obviously the organs, bones, etc are all still there - rib removal, while possible, is not done by tightlacers - but they have been moved around and squashed together. They may not function at peak efficiency, and serious tightlacers have massive problems with heartburn. (I think my chronic heartburn problems come from when I used to do it...I love Prilosec!) And it is true that long-term tightlacers would have dramatic health problems if they stopped - Cathie Jung essentially cannot take her corset off, although spook did and managed to go back up to an 18" waist.

But it's not damage exactly. It's all there, it all works, it just might not be as smooth as it used to be.

I've just realised that this is body modification. It's just not sub dermal implants, or tongue splitting, or tattooing, but it is. I have to admire the dedication.

You're exactly right! There is a great "corseting" gallery in the HARD section on BME (hard = payment required to view). Wearing a corset now and then won't modify anything, but if you do daily tightlacing, it's totally body modification.

Random aside, given that I'm not seeing it, I'm curious about, and guessing that tightlacing is probably not as effective for someone who's overweight?

It is and it isn't.

When there is fat to move around in addition to everything else, you're not going to get as good a result as a skinny person. You can do some very dramatic shapes as a fat person, but tightlacing isn't going to be as easy because of the fat in the way. (I'm talking about the physical stuff.)

However, wearing a corset restricts your stomach. A corset is not a weight loss program, but having a slightly restricted stomach, and being aware of the corset at all times, can make you eat a bit less.

I know when I'm able to wear mine on a daily basis I loose weight. You just can't eat as much when your tummy is all squished.

I was upset when we went to ren fair last year. I had a corset on under that pretty dress, and in order for that pretty dress to close to the point that the modesty panel covered everything, I had to be laced in very tightly. Well I always get a turkey leg when I'm at fair. Usually it will take me a little while, but I'll finish it. This year I carried the thing around an hour after we were done with lunch before giving up and tossing the half uneaten thing away!

When I wear my 'for fun' one (well the only one) for a few hours, I noticed that, and found myself going to the bathroom a lot more often as well. I have a small bladder at the best of times, compression certainly doesn't help!

I store mine rolled in satin drawstring bags. Keeps the dust off. You can hang them, but I'd only hang them over a hanger. I hate when shops use clips right on the corset, it ruins the fabric!

Thanks for the tip, I really need to go buy some tube tops. It's an underbust so I only really need something that covers that area.
