Corset Recommendations?

Hi, total newbie here... I've never owned a corset before but I would like to get one. However, I'm all discombobulated on fit and style (overbust, underbust, Edwardian, Victorian, etc.) for my body type! I don't want to spend a ton but I also don't want to waste money for cheap crap. One thing that really confuses me is that some corset sizes are marked by waist and some by bust.

Also, fitting problems is the story of my life! I have a...erm, rather ample bust with a narrow torso and I'm afraid that even though corsets can fit a number of different sizes, I might have problems. My current measurements are: bust (at fullest) 39-40"; underbust/bra band 32", waist 29.5" and high hip (hip bones) 36.5".

Can any of you with experience in this help or advise? Thanks! :)

I received a ton of awesome advice in this thread. And CutieMouse is our resident lingerie expert; I'm sure she'd be happy to be pointed to this thread via PM if she doesn't come by on her own.

In the end, I decided to wait until I was done having babies (we were trying to conceive when I started that thread, and have since had a munchkin) and settled on a shape I'm happy with, then go the custom-made route because I'm not thrilled with the styles, quality and sizing available off-the-rack. I'd rather have one corset (at first, at least) that fits me spectacularly than several that are so-so, and I think it'll be more economical to go for quality over quantity ('cause even the fairly good quality non-custom ones aren't cheap!) in the long-run, too.

On a side note, I've heard the same advice regarding shoes/boots that get heavy use; often it's more economical to buy a pair or two of quality custom-made than many pairs that are cheaper and don't fit your specific feet.

there is a thread...possibly in the BDSM forum, but it could be in another forum. I haven't seen it for a while but it had alot of good sites. I don't remember who started it...but it might have been Etoile. She would know..PM her

edit: I think SE's thread has the same links from Etoile

Thank you SweetErika. Unfortunately a lot of those links are not defunct, but I still found some good info. Meschantes was a vendor I was looking at too, and I'm glad it's recommended. One thing I'm contemplating is getting a custom-made one, to support by boobs.

I totally agree with you about quality/price issue. I don't mind paying a bit more for quality.

Depends what you want the corset for, but personally, I've found 'real' corsets with laces to be horribly uncomfortable even when they fit correctly, while off-the-shelf lycra-blend corset shirts give the look while being way more comfortable. I have two from lane bryant and one from torrid, although I wear plus-size clothes so that probably won't help in your particular case.

Well, first and foremost, I like the way they look. I'd want to wear them for bedroom fun and perhaps wear them out sometime. I've tried ones similar to the ones you prefer, but I don't like how they fit and they don't give me enough boob support. I don't want to have to wear one, "real" or not, and still wear a bra -- kinda defeats the purpose, I think. I've tried on a cheaper version of a "real" one -- an off the shelf 1 layered fabric lace-up bridal Edwardian? style one -- I wasn't the most comfortable but damn, I liked the way it looked, except it squished my boobage a bit too much. But that may have been the way it was laced. I don't mind suffering a little bit to look good. Hell, many of my pointy-toed high heels aren't that comfy after a while either.

I am also in love with this one: http://www.etsy.com/listing/57430798/classic-cameo-victorian-overbust-corset

Amazon also has great deals on corsets - yes they really do sell everything ;). Just be sure that you check individual sellers policies on returns on Etsy or Amazon since they vary.

Be sure to get your measurements done by a professional and have fun in your corset search! They are really such amazing pieces of clothing/lingerie.

Ooh pretty! It's a little out of my price range, but very very nice! Yes, I have been obsessing at several of the Etsy listings for a while. There seems to be several skilled corsetiers on Etsy. I did see some on Amazon, but they definitely would have to be returnable since I not sure how the ready-to-wear ones would fit me.

I just decided and will be placing an order for a custom corset. I've come to the conclusion that any read-to-wear ones would just be too uncomfortable and would make my boobs overflow too much and fall out (not that that's a bad thing in the right kind of situation). ;) Excited about this!

I  my corsets! Im a 40 HH and struggle to contain the puppies but I often wear an underbust with a bra or get a larger corset and lace it tighter around the waist and looser around the bust to accommodate them. Of course custom-made is best but they are too expensive for me so I buy ready made.

I wear mine out and about (so funny when I'm in Tesco and counting the gawps)!

I use a fab site but don't know if I can post it here so PM me and I'll give you their address

Yes, you can post the site here. The site rules prohibit advertising (posting stuff for the sake of promoting it and personal gain), but you'd be posting a resource that's related to the topic.

Ah ok thanks! The site is www.corsets-uk.com and they are amazing for a ready-made corset. I love their stuff and it's normally 3 for 2!

OK, this is not the one I custom-ordered (still hasn't come in yet), but in the meantime, I found a quality steel-boned ready-to-wear one at the right price. It's beautiful and more comfortable than some plastic-boned ones I've tried on. I can't wait until my custom one comes in.

Putting it on wasn't easy! It was hard to adjust the lacing by myself. I guess that'll be easier with some practice.
