From Charley's thread.

My reason for submitting my first story on Lit. was that I imagined I could write a better story than most of what I'd read.

(Purely on voting the answer was 'not necessarily')

In subesequent stories I began with the sex scene that I wanted to write and then built around that, back story, forward story even sometimes a hint of plot.

I've just been thinking that maybe I should enter the Valentine's contest, seeing as how I haven't written very much lately in the way of stories.

Now I'm sat thinking up pretty decent sex scenes and distracting my thinking by wondering about the structure, character development, plot, twist and plot twist.

This isn't block of any kind, I know that if I start typing on a fresh screen a story will unfold but now I'm thinking about 'good' writing
rather than providing a vehicle for a sex scene.

The question then is: Am I growing or just losing interest?

Is there anyone else in a similar dillema? Does writing smut lead on to stronger things like *gasp* Literary goals?

I'm with you, Gauche. Part of the reason it's taking me so long to finish anything at the moment is that I'm trying to do other things with my writing... literary things... It's like stacking up playing cards. Sometimes I add one more card and the whole thing crumbles, and then I can't face looking at it again.

I'm getting closer to not screwing up, though! So expect some output soon!

I found this too. I'd started writing before I joined here and found I had the basic tools and skills, but not the inspiration or the talent to write a novel or even a good short story. Then I found Lit. Saw an idea that I really liked and decided I could do it far better.

Then I started going regularly to the SDC and here and learning all I could learn and sending my stories through the great and wonderful WildSweetOne (who just isn't here enough; I learned so much from her) for editing.

Now I've written a non-erotic novel and am giving serious thought to taking this up as a career, or at least a paying sideline to an editor's job. That just wouldn't have happened without Lit.

Thank you.

Almost every post here mirrors my experience!

nearly everything I wanted to say has been said here, except for this:

I saw that Literotica was a low-stakes game to get in -- from reading the stories, I realized my first submission would most likely be accepted.

I'd corresponded with a successful Sci Fi writer about getting into writing. I asked him how he would start his career if he were at the beginning of it now. He told me he'd publish some stories online.

I'd written a Sci Fi story had a lot of explicit sex, so I looked for a porn story site to put it out on, and found Lit. This was after seeing that the genre in most Sci Fi sites was not what I was into.

The Sci Fi writer's name is Bob Sheckley. He published a lot of stuff in Playboy. He started 'Omni' magazine. His stuff was sexy, funny, absurd and clever. I still think that a lot of my stuff is an attempt to copy his style.
