I was recently contacted by a person seeking my permission to translate one of my stories and post it in a foreign website.

Who owns the copyright on the stories authors publish?

I wasn't sure I could give anyone permission to use a story from Literotica. I would never know if they did it anyway.

The Author owns the copyright.
That said, the USA does not seem to care too much about it, making it very expensive to make claims and so on.

You give Literotica a non-exclusive right to publish on this site.

That means you still own the story and can publish it anywhere else.

For a translation - you own the copyright of the original. The translator owns the copyright of the translation only.

But - in practice, despite your country's copyright laws and the Berne convention, once your story is published anywhere on the internet, including on Literotica, anyone can steal it and you have no real legal redress.

Edited for PS: Asking before making a translation is polite. Many of my stories have been translated into multiple languages and only a couple of people asked first. For some reason it seems popular to translate some of my stories into Czech, Russian and Japanese. I don't know why.

Unless you sign it away. You need to read any publishing offers very closely.
