This is well known as a stressful time of year. More sudden death and suicide than usual. The financial burden that can accompany Christmas's yuletidings. A calender packed with things to do and take care of as the end of the year approaches. Or not.

Anyway....it's a good time of year to think of those things we do for ourselves. Some kind of a moment that's a pure break from the holiday hustle bustle that allows us to let out a sigh and bring a curve to the lips.

One thing I think of is lingerie shopping. :)

There are others, of course, but it just seems suitable today.

It's the perfect selfish interlude while out and about. Even when it's just window shopping although it's nice to at least pick up something small. (You know, thongish or maybe just an over the knee item). And it's good to keep your eyes open....some little treasures can be found in many places in the mall other than Victoria's Secrets.

So what are some of the other things people can do to break stress in this busy season? Got a favorite place for yourself or a ritual that's yours alone?

I take a break from all the tasks of Christmas by coming here to Lit. :)

hehehe....I wonder if perhaps you are so balanced through regular Lit sessions you don't need extra coping mechanisms this time of year.

Or you're like me and you don't have time for the extras and Lit.:D

That's me.

If I'm out and about, then I don't make time for Lit. I go through cycles.

If I want to escape from stress, I read. Never fails.

I mean like a real honest to god book even:D

Hmmmm... there is some truth to that. I don't think I do anything "extra" to cope at this time of year. I'm actually at Lit less than usual, since I am busy getting other Christmas "chores" done. But I still try to check in, if only for a few minutes here and there.

Oh, yeah....books.:D

I can get lost in one myself. I have to be careful though. I can't put it down and then I'll be lost for hours.

Wait.....that sounds like Lit.:D

I know what you mean- :p

But that is ALSO true to some extent. When things are going well in my life, every day IS like Christmas.

Hey, if all it takes is a quick check-in to break up the chores then you must be doing ok.

Or keeping it sensible enough to spend your time where you need to.

(uh oh....better look at my to-do list soon...)

I think it is my same organized approach that I use for most things in life. After getting to be this old, I know when I have to have the shopping done, gifts wrapped and mailed, cards out, tree up, etc. to keep sane and I try to stay on schedule.

I gave up doing some things at all years ago- baking dozens and dozens of cookies, spending hours stringing lights to decorate the house, some of the dishes that take too long to prepare for the various parties, etc. No one notices and I stay sane.

The best proof I had of my theory was a couple years ago when I ended up really sick before and on Christmas (emergency room on Christmas morning is an adventure.) My choice was to cancel a party or have everyone come anyway knowing I hadn't been able to do many of the preparations that I would have normally done. Everyone came, no one cared about the "missing" items. The time spent with family and friends is much more important than the decorations and the food. I think that simple party was one of my favorites from over the years.

I thought, "Wow, what a great idea! I need some." :D

Nice post, Cheyenne.

Your right of course. It's so easy to get caught up in all the things we could do for the holidays but it pays to sit back and look at what's really important sometimes. I know I'm thinking about those cookies and such things but when it comes down to it if they don't happen it's not the end of the world.

There are many simple ways enjoy the true spirit of the season without the more material aspects and keeping in touch with that may be all we need.

Well, have a good cold one, then.

Um, I'll just take those keys from you as you walk on in.;)

Such an odd time of year.

Good will and holiday cheer.

Makes the tougher sides of life harder to bare in some ways.

In others it makes us treasure the more important things in life.

Reminds me of a movie...."It's A Wonderfull Life"

Such a feel-good classic if there ever was one.
