One thing I've noticed about the way the site is laid out is that unless a story ends up on a top rated list, it is unlikely that it will receive many new views once it moves out of the "new stories" list. For example, a story I wrote in the Incest/Taboo category got 14 comments and 22,000 views in the first week after it appeared on the site, which is fantastic and I count myself lucky, but then in the next 6 months, it only got 7,000 more views and 1 more comment. I would love to get more feedback, and for more people to see my work, but it doesn't seem likely.

I'll admit that I haven't come up with a solution, but I think it's worth considering and I wanted to open the subject to discussion. What do the rest of you think?

7,000 views in six months isn't bad for a backlisted story in a collection this size, I don't think. You'd be hardpressed to find a story site where 7,000 views accumulate ever. (Of course we have no idea what constitutes a "view" here.)

I'm actually shocked nearly every day to see the old stories of mine that readers have clicked a "favorite story" vote for--both that they are that old and that those particular stories would be favorited out of all the stories that could have been read of mine that day.

If you'll lower your expectations of response and permit yourself to be happy that you wrote a story and had it published on line, you'll save yourself a lot of sour thoughts.

Fair enough. It's just frustrating sometimes when you don't get as much feedback as you want, particularly for me since I don't have many stories online. But I get your point.

the best way to continue getting views is to post more stories. when readers like what they read, they will check your profile to see what else is available

In addition to SR's reply, I suggest writing more stories.

More stories = more times on the new stories list = more exposure = more readers. :)

However, keep in mind that readers aren't required to comment or send feedback.

Good point. I've always done that myself, so I guess it makes sense.

There are story sites that are for critique and where feedback is stressed. This isn't one of them, though. This is just one of the ones with the most readers. You might look for one of the others and post your stories to both sites.

how about??

Either reward a commentator (not an anonymous commenter) with an extra 1/2 vote, OR, conversely, penalize the voter who doesn't comment by giving credit for only 1/2 a vote? Well, it was an idea, or is an idea, however weak an idea it is.
