When you submit a story do you have to simultaneously apply for a contest or do you wait to see if it’s good enough and a judge of some sort declares you the winner?

All stories submitted, after a certain number of votes, become eligible for the monthly readers' choice awards. however, they are very far behind -- over a year -- in announcing those.

If you want your story submitted to one of the theme contests, then check the rules here. (These are for the current contest, Halloween, which will begin on Oct 1.)

In both the monthly and the themed contests, the story with the highest rating wins (as I understand it). If there is a tie, then the winner is the story with the most votes. I.e., if story A has a 4.5 and 100 votes, and story B has a 4.5 and 125 votes, story B wins.

Another contest is the year long Survivor's Contest, and those rules are here:

If you want to enter this one, go to the registration thread and do so, and you will be a contestant. Stories and poems accepted by Literotica can be entered on the scorecard you will be issued. :)

In the theme contests, such as Halloween, the sole criteria is the average score on votes cast, supposedly by those who have read the story, providing there are at least 25 of them. :)

Scouries has nothing to do with any contest on this site. The "contests" he is ballyhooing are non-existent, so don't let them distract you. :(
