Conservatives, Explain Ron Paul's Loss to Me

Mitt Romney has officially claimed the nomination for the Republican Party. Having skimmed some of the Republican debates, I can't quite figure out why Romney won and Paul lost. No one likes Romney; he's a flip-flopper, he enacted universal health care in Massachusetts, and he's a Mormon (for those who care about that).

Paul, on the other hand, has dedicated followers (including most of my conservative friends), is truly for small government, is straightforward, and has more integrity in his pinky finger than Romney has in his whole body. Honestly, the only thing I can think of is that Romney looks more presidential.

Since this is the only place where I can find an actual group of conservatives, I figure this is the best place to ask this question. Even if you are Paul-ite, maybe you know some other conservatives who voted Romney and can explain their thinking to me.

Feel free to trash Obama and liberals as long as you stay on topic.

Paul has a lot of radical ideas, extreme crazy nut job ideas. Yes, he has some great ideas too and his message resonates with your typical disenfranchised youth, but at the end of the day it's your average American who you need on your side, and his policies just weren't viable for them.

I am unaware of these radical ideas. Like he wants to cut the Dept of Education, but so does Romney, or at least he expressed interest in it.

Paul always looks like he just got out of rehab.

His views on foreign policy irks hawks (big one).

His views on going back to the gold standard.

His baggage including endorsements from troofers and racists. Even if he distances himself from them, it still does not help.

His views on the war on drugs irks some social conservatives.

That's what immediately comes to mind.

Don't get most of these. Most Americans are against the Afghanistan war, I think. I've no feeling on the gold standard either way, maybe that means something. Truthers and racists make up a large part of the Republican base, especially the Tea Party. Hell, Santorum had a couple slips about black people and he was the #2 nominee. And do people really care about his lax drug policy? That would surprise me.

The Party establishment can't stand a guy like him. They took over the party from the Taft-Goldwater wing with Nixon's nod in '68 and refuse to give it up.

Ichabod there. The glory has departed.

I'm voting Libertarian. Go Gary Johnson!

Yep, that's pretty much how it is. Lots of hypocrisy and double standards.

I definitely get why the Party doesn't like him. But voters aren't the party.

Go Johnson! Marijuana for everyone!

I feel like his pros should outweigh the cons. I'm missing something.

They think he can win. They'll compromise every principle they've ever espouse for this simple truth. That's it. Who has the best chance to put an "R" after the "POTUS."

That's all it's ever about.

Vote RINO 2012, because he may suck ass, but he sucks OUR ass.

Gary Johnson espouse actual "conservative" values and implemented them in his time as governor. He matches what the so-called conservatives espouse, but they can't vote for him, because the winning liar then wouldn't have an R after his name.

Must.

Vote.

Republican.

Nothing else matters.

Mecha, explain your lack of doing the dishes since we're roommates and all.

Thanks.

You can't possibly believe this almost exact statement could not be written about the Democrats? And if you do, you have lost a lot of crediblity in my eyes.

Signed, A Pox on Both Your Houses.

Gary Johnson, lifetime politician desperate to keep the string going. :)

Ron Paul is a bit far to the right and as already stated a bt nutty.

Romney is more moderate so he will be more palatable to Indepndents, Liberal Republicans and Conservative Democrats. Also more people know his name, than know Ron Paul, and name recognitin means a lot in politics. A lot of great canidates (on both sides) lost because no one ever heard their name.

Johnson founded one of New Mexico's largest construction companies.[2] He entered politics for the first time by running for Governor of New Mexico in 1994...

He sold the company, now he is just another good ole boy. Ron Pauls boy. :D

Actually, I think Paul has more name recognition than Romney, or did in 2011.

Do a google search for news items
Mitt Romney 44.4 Million items
Ron Paul 108 thousand.

Granted a lot has been written about Romney since the primary but still tha's a hell of a difference, so the avg Joe who doesn't watch much news or pay attention to politics rarely heard Paul's name, and usually with the other cntenders in the Primary. Gingrich Romney and Santorum were the only three who stood a chance. Of those Romney stands the best chance to beat Obama because he appeals to a wider political spectrum than Gingrich ever could, and Santorum was a relative unknown except for his faith which discouraged those who don't want someone of faith running the Government.
