Consequences

Nicole sat on the steps of some apartment building about 2 blocks from where the party was held. She had stopped crying about 10 minutes ago and was really embarassed she had ended up calling Kyle and telling him, while in tears, that James had dumped her off somewhere near the end of town, furious at her for playing him.

The truth was, and she swore that she wasn't going to tell anyone about this, was that James had tried to take advantage of her after they had left the party. When she wouldn't submit to him, he grew angry and stopped the car, dumping Nicole off.

Nicole didn't have the number for a taxi. She didn't want to tell her mother or father so, the only choice was to call Kyle. She had placed his number in her phone that night just because she knew she'd needed to call him soon.

With 'the news'.

So now, she waited, her tears long since dried as she wondered what the hell could happen next. All she wanted to do right now was go home and eat.

Kyle was suprised to get a call from Nicole. That was possibly the last thing he expected after she abruptly made him depart the other night from her apartment. After their conversation on the phone he went back out to the bar and told the girl he had been talking to that he had to go due to work. Before she could even question him, he showed her his badge.

Kyle drove as quickly as he could to get to where Nicole was. Even though he was a cop, he made sure not to abuse his power. He pulled up beside her, seeing that she had been crying. He opened the door and got out. He walked over to her and asked "is everything ok?" He helped her up and at the same time, wiped some of the tears from her face. "What happened?" He opened the back seat and got out his jacket that he had neglected to take in from the other day and wrapped it around her. Then he opened the door for her and helped her in. "Where do you want to go?" he asked with concern in his voice.

"I don't know.." she said, "Is there a way to maybe, go back in time and re-do somethings over?"

"Home, I guess." Nicole was quiet for a while before speaking again, "I'm so sorry to have called you like this. I just didn't know who to call. I didn't need to hear a lecture from my father or have him send someone I didn't know. My mom doesn't like to drive...ughh!"

She noticed the jacket and laughed, "I don't think you're met to get this jacket back at all."

Kyle laughed as well. "Perhaps," he said as he started to drive Nicole back to her place. "There's a lot I'd like to re-do if I could go back in time," he added as they drove. "But, I think everyone has that wish. Sadly, it can't always be that way. Also, don't feel bad for calling. I don't blame you at all. Besides, I wasn't doing anything important," which he thought was fairly true.

They continued to drive back to her apartment. "Do you need to stop to get something to eat or drink?" he asked. "I'm also curious as to why you were out on the streets on your own. Is everything alright?" he tried to ask as melchonly as possible. He didn't want to seem like he was prying too much into her personal life, however, at the late hour it was, it seemed somewhat relevant.

Nicole briefly thought about earlier with James and groaned. "Yeah, food sounds good right about now." She sighed, figuring she was doing better than before now that she was able to calm down. "Ughh.. So, another fund raiser happened tonight. At least I think it was one. I can't keep up anymore."

She paused for a minute, "Fast food. I want fast food. I don't care from where. Just something fattening."

Pulling his coat around her more, as if trying to bury herself in it, "So, anyway, I had this date. Some Senator's son who agreed to take me to the the party. It was really our second date...sooo...long story short, he tried to take advantage of me, I said no. He got pissed and tossed me out of the car. Well, he didn't really toss me out. More like grabbed my arm and yanked me out of his car and left me there as he took off. So, long story short, I was frustrated, emotional and just.... I don't know." She sighed again, "Too much information, I know." Nicole looked over at Kyle, "See why I want a do over?"

"We can get fast food," he said as he looked over at her, "though I honestly don't see you as the fast food type." He started to look for a place that was open this late. He took his time since he wasn't in a huge hurry.

"Stupid bastard," he said as he listened to Nicole talk about what happened with the Senator's son. "I'm sorry he did that too you. No one deserves to be treated that way." They pulled up to a burger place and ordered some food. After paying for it and taking it, he started to drive her back to her apartment.

"Just keep in mind not all guys are like that," he said as they continued to drive. "Did you want to press charges on him? It's the weekend so he'd be spending a few days in jail for aggrivated assault." He looked over at her as he waited for her response. "Don't worry about thinking you're telling me too much information. I'm a cop, remember? I deal with a lot of detailed information for a living," he gave a small smile as he told her that.

They continued to talk while they got closer to her place. "Do you at least want to call your parents and let them know you're alright?" he asked with some concern. "I bet they'd at least be happy to know that you're OK and that you went out with a tool." It was a few minutes later after he asked that when he pulled up to her apartment complex. "Would you like me to escort you inside Nicole?" he asked as he got out and opened the door for her.

"Yeah...well, there's actually a lot you don't know about me." At least not yet, she thought.

When he mentioned pressing charges, Nicole laughed bitterly, "Oh, yeah, sure. And then the press gets a hold of it, dragging my father, along with the senator's name through the mud...no, I'm not going to press charges. In fact, I just want to go home and eat."

"I know not all guys are like that...I don't even know why I agreed to go with him...maybe it was just to get my mother out of my business, I guess."

When they arrived at her place, Nicole was tempted to ask him up, but he was probably busy. As she got out of the car, Nicole figured to ask anyway, "would you like to come up for awhile?" She hoped he would say because she didn't want to be alone.

"That's very true," he said when she mentioned not knowing much about her. "Do you date much?" he asked as he walked her up to her stairs. "Or is it just more of your mother nagging you until you go out with someone?"

"Yeah, I can come up for a while," he said in response to her question. "This is the first full weekend off I've had in about 2 months, so I don't need to get up early tomorrow." He carried the food as they made their way back to her apartment. He waited until she got inside before he followed and joined her. He made his way to the table and set the food down. "So, why don't you tell me more about yourself?" he inquired. "You can even ask me anything you want to, nothing's off limits," he said as he started to get the food out.

Making their way up the stairs, Nicole shrugged, "Mostly the latter. My mother...she's a ..handful."

After they entered her apartment, Nicole turned the lights on and headed to the bedroom, where she quickly changed into a pair of running shorts and a tshirt, all while talking loudly, "And to ansewr your question, no, I don't date much."

She tossed the dress aside and walked back out to the small dining room, "And to expand on that dating issue, I don't date because...well, I've only been back in town a few weeks," she started to take out the food and took a seat on a chair as she took a sip of her soda, "and I just started my job so I've been busy with that. I don't really know anyone anymore because most of my friends have moved out of the city and besides, I never really had any real friends. Just people I went to school with."

Laughing, Nicole shook her head, "Tell you about myself? There's not much to tell. I was born and raised in New Port, went to school, graduated, went to college, majored in business and now, I'm back."

"OK, anything huh?" She leaned back in her chair, brought up one leg to her chest and rested her chin on it as she looked at Kyle, "You tell me about yourself Mr. Liaison slash detective," she said with a grin.

"Hmmm, let see," he said as he took a sip of his drink. "I grew up out east, went to school, graduated, went to college, got a degree in policial science, tried out for the FBI, got washed out, applied for the police department here, got in." He took a break and had a bite of food. "I managed to get promoted really quick after stopping several drug busts, found some gangs that I helped take down, ruined a sting operation and got transferred to the liason deaprtment. That's kind of reserved for people who screw up but don't get fired." He continued eating before talking again. "The main problem is, however, they put someone with abition in a post where they want people to just wait out their time," he said with a grin.

"Well, at least you get to have a bit of a clean slate with moving back to town. I was a bit surprised you used your mother's maiden name for your job, but I don't blame you. If I was in your position, I'd do the same thing," he told her as he finished eating. "Anything else you'd want to know?" he asked as he looked back at her.

The world of politics was a lot different than it was for others than those raised in and around it. Smiling as she took a sip of her soda, Nicole shrugged, "I use it because not I want to. It's mostly because should I do anything wrong, embarrass the family in any way, my name won't be immediately associated with that of the good ol' mayor's." She had said it with such ease, it really didn't bother her at all anymore.

She then listened to his explanation of who he was as she nibbled on some fries. Even though this meal was something she wouldn't normally eat, it really did taste like a gourmet meal.

"Hmmm...anything else.. well, you certainly have what the ladies want, looks, the job mixed with the danger and yet, you're single..why? Not ready to settle down? Start a family?" She figured she'd just ask to see what his thoughts were before she had to tell him soon that he was going to be a father.

Kyle got up and walked over to the couch to sit down. "I guess," he started to say, "starting out my career it was more danger and less stability. Now, it seems to be the opposite." He scratched his chin as he thought more about it. "I think right now, there's no one I've really found that seems like my soul mate. It just seems like I haven't found the right person, I guess, as cliche as it sounds." He looked over at Nicole while he finished his logic.

"What about you? Aside from just starting working for the city, why haven't you found someone yet?" he inquired. He figured it was only fair since she asked. There was no doubt that she was dateable. At least to him. He also started to remember about that night at the Mayor's Ball. She was fun in bed, hell a lot of fun, he thought to himself as he started to listen to her reasoning.

"Hmmm..." it was a good question..a question her mother like to ask at least once a week, "I can honestly say I don't know. I could take the easy way out and blame my family. I mean, seriously, my family would prefer I date a nice young man who is on his way to the top, hence, the senator's son," with that she made a face as she followed him, taking her drink with her before sitting next to him on the couch.

"But really, I don't know. I guess like you, I haven't found that one person who will like me for me and not for who my family is."

She finished off her soda and set it on the coffee table, "Again, thank you for tonight. I owe you one, seriously. And for my little emotional breakdown when I called you, I hope you don't hold that against me. I hope I didn't ruin your night by interrupting it." She told him quietly as she leaned her head on her hand against the couch.

"Oh, no problem," he said as she apologized for thinking she ruined his night. "We all need a little help every now and then, I'm just glad you called and allowed me to help. I'd hate for something to happen to you," he told her. He watched as she leaned her head against the couch.

"Some advice?" he asked inquisitively. "I was actually engaged in college my Junior year. She wanted me to work for some firm after graduation that she got me to intern at over that summer. I finished my Senior year and decided to persue trying out for the FBI," he told her as he looked into her emerald green eyes.

"I would've supported her in anything to the ends of the Earth, however, when she didn't want to support me, I called it off. It was greedy, but it showed the true colors." He tried to force a small smile as he talked about it. "I did what I felt I had to do for myself. It's not a bad thing, even if it means pushing some people back to a degree. Your family can be in your life, but they don't need to run it, no matter how powerful they are."

Kyle could see how tired Nicole was getting. He figured after giving a small monologue of taking risks and doing his own thing why not take a chance. "Did you want me to stay here tonight in case you need someone to talk to again?" he inquired as he watched her start to struggle to stay awake.

Nicole heard what he said and felt for him when she heard the hurt in his voice. She thought about it and knew he was right but knowing and doing were two different things. Perhaps she'd have some backbone soon. Hell, even after tonight proved that she couldn't keep doing this dating thing her mother had forced on her. It just wasn't natural.

When he asked if he should stay over, Nicole looked over at him lazily, barely opening her eyes, "Would you mind laying in bed with me? Until I fall asleep at least?"

"Yeah, not a problem," he told her as he went to go and lock the door. He took off his shoes and put them near the door. As he came back he picked her up and carried her to the bedroom and laid her down. He made sure she was next to her dress which Kyle picked up and placed on the chair in her room.

He took out his gun and badge and laid them down as he pulled the covers over her and laid down on the bed next to her. It felt so nice and refreshing, he thought to himself. He snuggled next to her and held her close as he genly stroked her hair.

Kyle didn't relaize how tired he was until he saw Nicole fall asleep. As soon as that happened, he ended up falling asleep as well.

During the night, Nicole found herself getting closer to Kyle, her arm spread across his chest. By the morning, she squinted as the morning light shone through the small bedroom window high above the bed. It took her a minute or two to fully wake and realize that Kyle was still sleeping next to her.

She was touched that he stayed, even if he probably just fell asleep next to her probably on accident. Leaning over to his face, she kissed his chin and then nuzzled his neck before calling out to him quietly, "Kyyyle.." she said and watched as his eyes opened. She smiled at him when their eyes met, "You didn't have to stay the night, but thank you."

Kyle moaned a little as he heard his name. It took him a moment to remember where he was. As he opened his eyes, he looked at Nicole. "Oh, shit," he said groggily. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep," he told her. "I remember seeing you sleep, so calmly and peaceful and then I remember nothing until I just heard your voice," Kyle admitted. "I hope you aren't mad at me. I don't think I tried anything. I'm pretty sure I didn't."

Kyle wasn't sure if he should try to get up or just continue to lay there. She did have her soft arm across his chest and she was fairly close to him. "Did you manage to sleep alright?" he asked after a moment.

Nicole laughed and shook her head as she sat up, "No, nothing happened," she punched his arm playfully, "Why? Is that a first for you?" She teased and scooted over to him, her back against him.

"I slept fine, how about you? And why would I be mad? I got to spend another night with you..even if nothing happened." She was still teasing him and she hoped he knew it. "I don't even want to know what time it is," Nicole said as she put a pillow over her head, "I think my body loves to get up early because I don't think I've ever slept in past 6AM"

Kyle let out a soft groan as she punched his arm. "No, not a first," he said with a hint of a playful tone, "it was a second." He felt her move closer to him. It did feel a little awkward to him, to a degree. Usually he didn't sleep with so much clothing on and usually not above the covers.

"I've slept worse," he told her. "It would've probably been more comfortable being under the covers and with less clothing," he admitted with a small grin he didn't know if she could see.

Kyle looked at the window that was allowing the sun to shine through. He decided to get up, grab the dress on the chair and draped it over so that it blocked out most of the sunlight. "Problem solved," he said as he looked at her head covered with the pillow. "Now you can get some more sleep," he pointed out as he started to walk back towards the bed sitting on it.

"Thank you Kyle." She said, but was sure her voice was muffled by the pillow. As he got up, she yanked the blanket from his side over her, which was still warm from where his body lay.

"I hope you don't think I'm chasing you away, unless you have something to do, I could make breakfast in an hour...or two."

She was tempted to sleep some more because it was so comfortable and having him here felt good. Perhaps she did sleep better because of him. Usually, she would have her music on all night so the little sounds of the apartment settling wouldn't freak her out as it usually did. Childish perhaps, but she dealt with it as best she could.

"First full weekend off in two months," he said, "I have no committed plans." He watched as she took the covers from his side. "I could use some more sleep. Would it be too weird if I laid back down with you with my jeans and shirt off?" he asked. He already thought there was a small degree of strangeness with sleeping here last night. Hell, even after finding out it was the mayor's daughter, it was still strange.

He continued to sit on the bed, waiting for an answer as he started to rub his eyes a little. The only good thing, aside from sleeping next to this fine specimen of a lady, was the fact that she wasn't judging him or his motives. He gently leaned over and ran his fingers through her hair again.

"Mmm.." she said when she felt him playing with her hair and she patted the space next to her, "It's all yours."

She didn't hear him undress since she had the pillow on her head still but she did feel him when he laid down next to her. Nicole moved slightly so that she too had gotten under the covers and felt his body press against hers.

Nicole couldn't say how long they both lay like that but it felt like a long time when in fact, it had only been a few minutes when she turned over and again, reached over and started to rub his chest with her hand.

"I hope you don't mind." She said in a whisper.

"Only if I get to return the favor," he said as he placed his hands on her stomach. He only touched the exposed part, not wanting to get in trouble for trying anything witih her. He was also hoping that Nicole wasn't going to get too close to him, unless she wanted to be surprised to a degree.

"God, your skin is so smooth," he told her as he continued to feel her stomach and sides. He didn't know what got over him but he leaned his head closer to hers and gently kissed her lips. The good thing is that he didn't use any tongue in case she immediately rejected his kiss. In the back of his mind he knew he was playing with fire, however, he didn't seem to care at that point.

Finally bringing herself out from under the pillow, Nicole came eye to eye with Kyle and she smiled. "Mmmmm.." she said as she felt his hand on her stomach, which made her eyes close again as she enjoyed it.

She was a little surprised by his kiss and even though it was just a peck, she wanted more of it. So, she moved closer to him and kissed him, this time, deepening the kiss. It just felt so right that she continued to kiss him and run her hand over his chest and stomach and then back up to his neck, only to end up cupping the side of his face. "Want to work up a breakfast appetite?" She asked quietly, yet seriously.
