Problem: connect 2.1 Bose Companion Speakers to TV (Toslink audio out only, RCA in)

Solution?: Buy Roku. It has AV out. From Roku, connect RCA TV jack (yellow) to my TV then connect the audio jacks (yellow and Red) to 3.5mm jack adapter into the legacy bose speakers.

Will this work? What if the audio coming out is 5.1/dolby/dts?? will sound still come out of the Bose speakers? (don't care if it comes out in those formats so long as something comes out)

Thanks

If the Roku unit only has two audio jacks, you will get full spectrum stereo sound. You may need to select the stereo track of your video source, if the source offers other tracks (5.1, 7.1, etc.)

Thanks for the tip on changing audio tracks back to stereo.

But going on this one, do you think this is do-able: one rca jack (yellow) connected to the TV, the other two jacks (white and red) connected to a 3.5mm adapter which in turn I connect to my Legacy bose speakers??

I am about to order the item online and I really hate the hassle of returning items.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

"2.1" usually means that there's a large bass unit and two smaller speakers, with the large unit including an amplifier and power cord. If the input to the large unit is a 3.5mm jack, then yes, you know what you need. I think it's likely that the large unit will accept the two RCA inputs directly, and might also accept the Toslink from your TV.

I didn't think to check. It does accept RCA input!
No need for the adapter then.

Buying the Roku now.

Thank phrodeau!
