Congratulations Lockheed...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this supposed to be a JOINT contract between Lockheed and Boeing?

Nope!

Before the truth gets swallowed up by rumour, and Hollywood start making movies about Lockheed building the best plane since sliced bread all on it's little ownsome:

From NYTimes:

Lockheed's partner abroad, Britain's BAE Systems

For Lobito's benefit BAE is the British Aerospace mentioned earlier. Boeing were a rival, just that. Their comment? "We gave it our best shot".

:p

Actually, JSF should save the gov't money in the long run. All branches use the same plane, thus the same parts, maintenance. And, its stealthy so there's less of a chance to get shot down.

Boeing didnt need the contract as much as Lockheed did. Boeing has its comcercial airline division to keep it going.
Lockheed only has military craft.(I could be wrong)
If they had gone to Boeing the military would have out lots of people out of work...

Besides each company got 600 million to reaseach and develope.
Not bad.

From whoremonger to....

The war mongers on this forum just love things like new fighter jets. I say we take the $200 billion and feed the starving, heal the sick , and investigate the shrub administration for conspiring to orchestrate WWIII.

Yay! I'm a warmonger....do we get a neato shirt or something in this club?

Special handshake?

Group discounts?

This aircraft will help cover our ass (and the asses of those we will defend from time to time ) while we attempt to do all these things. We will try to do them won't we?

I think the joint in the name of the project stands for the fact tthat this fighter will be used my more than one branch of the military.

Myrrdin, yes they're slow, but that's the whole point!

I think they're great, and I have a huge amount of respect for them. Purpose built, and very useful.
I'm also grateful that they're slow and noisy. I live in an area used for military practice. Inflatable imitation tanks are put out for them to locate. The Warthog is one of the few jets I can hear coming before they arrive. Those blasted F-15's and Tornado's have been and gone before the sound wave hits me. Leaving me standing on the pedals wondering what the fuck just dropped off me harvester!
If I'm quietly minding my own business, concentrating on getting a straight furrow across the field, when one of those fighter jets screams overhead , it can be seriously bad for my blood pressure
Also being quite mountainous here , it's not uncommon to be able to look down into the cockpit of a jet, as it flies down the valley bottom beneath me, as I work across the hillside.
