Congratulations Lockheed...

Nice plane........still it only took about 40 years for them to build a successor to the Harrier jump jet ;)

I also live near the Lockheed plant & Fort Worth is doing the happy dance this weekend. Getting the contract is going to mean some more jobs, which is good for all of the DFW area. I have a lot of friends out at Lockheed & they are breathing a sigh of relief.

If Lockheed didn't get the contract, who would have? Are there any other aerospace companies out there anymore? I guess just Boeing-McDonnell Douglas, and you'll probably be hearing in the next few days that they're laying off 275,000 workers and the CEO has been ritually executed by the board of directors.

Growing up I desperately wanted to be a fighter pilot, and when I had my eyes checked in 6th grade and learned that I had 20/50 vision and needed glasses, I broke down in tears. So I love fighters. But, in this day and age, to we really need to spend $200 billion on a new one? I know the Russians have a few new jets that can compete with the F-15 and F-16, but if push came to shove we could probably deal with them no problem. I guess the Chinese are still a threat...I guess we still need the ability to acheive total air superiority...but $200 billion...ouch babe. I could do a lot of good with $200 billion.

Boeing was the other contender for the contract. We lost them to Chicago earlier this year when they were moving some portion of their operations. Dallas tried, but they went with the Midwest. I think that Boeing & Lockheed are about the only two left with the facilities to build the planes. Not sure of all the details, I have been working a lot of hours, getting the store ready for the holidays.

Errr....sorry to burst your bubble but you might like to remember that the USSR as was made a few aeroplanes and the European Union can turn out the odd flying machine too.

Also the plane it's replacing was designed and built in the UK decades ago and no one has come up with anything to do the job better until now.

Also you might like to know that the USA is now using rocket engines designed by the USSR that are better than anything NASA ever came up with in....and why, well NASA's computers told them that the type of rocket engine couldn't be built while the commie enineers just got on and solved the problems by building the engines and testing them in the real world.

Perhaps we don't need em right now, but it's not like ordering a Ford pick-up truck. The first 22 jets wont be delivered until at least 2008.

The Brits are buying 150 of them. woohoo PP man!!

Dust off about 50 spitfires have your lads fly em to afgan and we'll wrap up this war in a week.

No probs WD...

the Brylcream Boys are standing by...

Wilco and out!

:D

 Oh! my.

Anything to avoid building a proper aircraft carrier.:p

Re April's favourite

They must be the slowest, noisiest aircraft ever to hold mock dogfights over Wales. You can hear them coming from miles away.
No wonder the pilots cockpit has to be a bulletproof titanium bathtub.

Dude...that's blasphemy. That's the baddest tank-killing plane on the planet. Shame on you.

I like the Warthog

April has good taste....she likes me doesn't she....

I mean she does...really....

The A10 was probably the ugliest thing you ever saw...

if you were an Republican Guard tanker.

and the prettiest vision if you were an infantryman pinned down by the aforementioned goof.

Myrrdin, yes they're slow, but that's the whole point! What better way to destroy a tank then to go in slow and low? Errm, okay, who put a slogan in my post? LOL

I think they're great, and I have a huge amount of respect for them. Purpose built, and very useful.

Thumper, well...yeah, I like you. *blushing* No further comment.

unfortunately waht's good for one city, and company is BAD for another.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this supposed to be a JOINT contract between Lockheed and Boeing?

Since Lockheed has this contract, that means that Boeing can now do what they've been threatning to do, and lay off over 5000 people, with a good number in the city I live in. When Boeing ate up McDonnell Douglas, they FUCKED St. Louis VERY VERY HARD, and this will only worsten it.

There's enough fucking unemployment right now, without having something like this happen, (myself included). It's about time the Government stop letting ONE company do these contracts, and spread them out, or make the companies share in the profits, by working together on a few projects.

I could be wrong though, Hell if I knew what i was talking about, I wouldn't be unemployed now would I?

April

I always thought you would enjoy the low and slow approach....;)

joint..as in joint strike fighter I do believe refers to it's branch crossing role. The Navy, Air Force, Marines and even the Army(I think) will be utilizing it.

I was hoping Lockheed would get it....Boeing has other products and is more diverse. Lockheed would have gone belly up if they didn't get it. They are way too specialized. Boeing may lay some people off but far less than if Lockheed would have if they didn't get it.

The war mongers on this forum just love things like new fighter jets. I say we take the $200 billion and feed the starving, heal the sick , and investigate the shrub administration for conspiring to orchestrate WWIII.
