For not playing the race card.....

For Standing up in his own campaign stumps....and correcting the misconcieved opinions of his own followers.

Thanks, John....when everyone else wanted you to hit below the belt....you said ...no.

You played fair. As fair as politics can be allowed...and then some.

Are you saying that with a straight face?
Indeed...and if you question that...you need to look back at hstory.

Stella...stop being such a die hard liberal...and accept the fact that this was probably the most gentile election ever.

Enough with the BS.

McCain ran a clean campain...just as clean as Obama, if not cleaner.

Your hatred of republicans needs to stop here and now.

This is an historic day.

Let's celebrate...not hate.

I'll agree with the last... and let the rest go...

He did not play fair.

But it's over. And he gave a very nice concession speech.

This just proves that both parties did pick statesmen, after all. Too bad both of them were fundamentally wrong about the role of government. But that's a side issue.

I applaud McCain's speech. It has shown the real McCain. Now I wait to see the real Obama.

I'm a live hard liberal!

it's a wonderfully historic day! Drinks are on me! :cattail:

Sorry, but that was McCain's biggest failing in this election. He did, in fact, have a fine reputation for being fair--and he threw it away in reaching for the brass ring. He occasionally showed flashes of the old, fair John--but these only served to highlight how much he had been willing to jump off that bandwagon to scrape together enough backing to win. The pity is that I think he would have done better by sticking to his former public persona. Maybe he can return to that back in the Senate. He speech was more the old John McCain.

But, no, he rolled in the mud during the campaign.

Oh yeah, sr71plt. The concession speech was his crowning glory, IMO. And I would swear that he was happy and releived to say it.

He played fairer than your clown did.
He didn't lie about what is coming in taxes.
Enjoy the tax hike and smile when you get what you wanted.

They're both clowns. A year ago virtually everyone prayed for someone besides these guys. Competent, ethical people dont want the job.

So now we try and live with it.

As objectively as I can manage:

Was it Willie Horton bad? Lee Atwater style character assasination? No.

Was there Karl Rove FUD tactics? Yes. Was it exceptionally bad FUD? In a handful of cases. The blatant attempts at terrorism connection obviously.

The rest, like the socialism yapping, was pretty cheap smoke n mirror rhetorics. But then again so was the 90% mantra from Obama. Both were fallacious in their own way. But easy sells.

Aside from that, I think McCain had good intentions to play honorable, but not the control of his situation and campaign to do so. The everlasting impression for me is how many moves he made that damaged himself rather than the opposition. The Palin pick, the "suspension", the Spain thing... and the list goes on. He seemed constantly out of his element on the campaign trail, seemed to get stressed out and confused, and therefore made some catastrophic desicions. The race rode him more than he rode the race, if you will.

And the result was not that his campaign was extremely dirty. It was just not... prudent. Everyone smears. But McCains side delivered thinly veiled blatant smears instead of the Obama camp's more well packaged character attacks.

The Mac is just not good at this. So the superior campaigner won.

The concession speech showed that once there was nothing to lose, the stress faded, and a steady, sober man appeared.

I have very little financial wealth these days, but I honestly don't resent paying taxes. I resent mis-spent taxes. I fantasize about having a personal line-item veto so I could approve or refuse every proposed expenditure of my share: I'd invest mine in health care and infrastructure and renewable energy, security at our air and seaports, improving public education, protecting the environment, fighting the genocide in Africa, and a re-do in Afghanistan, among other things. Your list of necessary spending wouldn't look like mine - but if you claim you wouldn't have one, and that your list wouldn't cost me a bundle (like Bush's war) it's not a credible claim. Our record deficit, our massive indebtedness to China and even Mexico, can't be willed away. Taxpayers are going to be stuck with the bill, now and for generations to come. I didn't create that situation, and neither did my candidate. So suck it up and move on. You guys had your turn, and the world has suffered for it. You have hardly earned the right to whine about the price tag.

Sorry, Misty, but people who were morons on Nov. 3rd, are still morons on Nov. 5th.

McCain lied his ass off, and he knew it. I would say he hated it, too. Since the day he won the primaries, I've never seen him look so happy as when he threw in that towel last night.

Wouldn't Obama be the one to congratulate on not playing the race card?

Aren't black people the ones who get to play the race card?

I've never played the race card. I always thought that was because I was white. Turns out it's because I'm honorable.

Good to know.

I have a lot of respect for McCain, despite differing with him on some issues, and I hope he doesn't sort of wander off into the sidelines after today. He can be a bridge between the 2 parties and play a valuable role in the coming years. I would even like to see him in Obama's cabinet, since he has said he wants Republicans in it. It might go a long way to easing tensions and bringing the country together.

Thank you for being brave enough to say this on this board! John McCain is a true American Hero and showed grace last night in conceding to his rival. Too bad others cannot show that grace.

I didn't vote for Mr. Obama but he is now my president elect and I will give the respect due his accomplishment. Good for him and everyone who won. Now he and the others have he hard work of the business of America. God speed to them all. :)

He showed the grace last night that has been missing for the past six months-- at least.

WE ALL have the hard work ahead of us, and we will have a president who knows it.

You wouldn't know the truth if it bit you on the ass.

I don't know what 'The Truth' is, DP. But considering the damage True Believers such as yourself have done through history, I'd just as soon not know it.

I barely know the good. I prefer that to 'The Truth'. I suspect that's something you wouldn't know if it bit you on the ass.

The truth is:
Taxes are going up for anyone that works.
There is going to be a serious attempt to make it a crime to defend yourself inside your own home with a firearm.
There will be an attempt to outlaw handguns.
If Obama does his "meet without preconditions" stupidity the US will return the the "doormat" status of the Carter years.

This is only based on Obamas voting record and words "Before" the last 6 months when he spouted his run to center to get elected lies.
