Confusion about story ratings

I see that all stories have a numeric rating, like 3.87 or 4.13, etc. Where does this come from?

I read a "new" story that had a number 3.73, but it had no reader ratings (stars) at the end of the story, and no other comments. After I rated it, the number on the table of contents didn't change. Is that calculated immediately, or daily, or what?

There is a "Stories" section in the FAQ, but it does not explain this, and does not explain the yellow star icon on the table of contents (which seems to show the number of views of each story).

Thanks,
LittleCarol

The ratings go from 0-50.

You must not be reading very good stories...

The score is 0-5, with 5 being the best. The score is an average of all votes. A story gets about 1 vote for about every couple hundred reads. It gets about 1 comment for every thousand reads. Some categories attract more votes and comments than others. Scores are updated once a day, and every so often, votes from the same IP address are deleted.

In the big picture, the scores don't really mean anything. It all pays the same.

Thanks bronzeage, I see this morning that the number has changed for the story I had rated.
