Am I missing something? Everytime I go into chat there very little talking. Is that common or is everyone having private convos?

Its fairly common in my experience but does depend on which rooms you're in and the time of day......

If you're in the lobby it's easy to miss a lot of conversation with all the join the room / leave the room system messages so if you're planning on chatting in the lobby its best to turn those off by clicking on the cog icon at the bottom right of the chat window.
