I wrote a story that has received a relatively small number of hits, but managed to garner a nice red "h" after 10 people had provided their rating. The cumulative rating was 4.70. Then an eleventh person came along who was not all that impressed, and I lost the red "h", and the cumulative rating dropped to 4.45. I was a little disappointed, but it's hardly the end of the world. Anyway, it has stayed at 4.45 for a number of weeks. No one else has submitted a rating during that period. Today I was pleased to see that the cumulative score had rebounded back to 4.70. I figured one or two new people may have weighed in to increase the score. However, that's not the case at all. For unknown reasons, that low score by the 11th person was eliminated, and the 4.70 is based only on 10 persons weighing in.

Could somebody explain how this works? Even though my ego is pleased with the higher score, I don't understand how or why that 11th person's vote/assessment could be eliminated.

I often wonder if people go over to the story section and ask questions about posting on the GeeBee.

Chatters and Story People. Sheeeeesh

It's not like there are 20 or 30 other forums with "story" "writers" "authors" or some variation thereof in the forum index. Why ask here???? It's damn odd, that's for sure.

Also - most people on the GeeBee don't know how to read, so chances of them actually knowing there is a story section are slim. Post a picture of an ape fucking a goat though, and you'll get 200 replies.

This made me snort out loud.

The administrators periodically sweep votes for fraudulent and/or malicious votes and remove them -- especially close to tabulating the results for various contests.

I don't come here to read the tripe or ride a goat or milk a spore.

Two replies would be good.

I have a family story about a circus monkey and a stray cat, but I doubt anyone would be interested.

You have a picture of an ape fucking a goat? I think I might want to see that.

hiddenurge your question would be better asked on the Authors Hangout. What happens is every so often is sweeps are run on scores. No one except the owners know exactly how they work but they sweep away some of the low scores.

Doing some basic math the first 10 voters gave you a goodly number of 5 and 4 with maybe a couple of 3s. Your last single voter gave you a 2.

I suspect with several higher scores the sweep deleted the 2 because it fell out out of the generally higher scores range.

The sweeps are pretty well known within the authors boards and their are several threads about them on there. As to exactly how and when they work is pretty much a mystery. What I just told you is a pure guess on my part and has not a single fact to back it up.

The Loving Wives trolls used to votes 1s but some learned about the sweeps and started voting 2s for the stories they felt went against their strongly held beliefs.

If you are worried about your ratings, you shouldn't be an author, you need a thicker skin, and not give a fuck about such stuff. No matter what you write, some people will love it, others will hate it.
