Confessions and Contrition

"Father Gabriel, so wonderful to see you," the well dressed, middle-aged man said as he extended his pink, wrinkled hand toward the tall, slender priest. "I hope your first few weeks with us have been good. What do you think of the church?"
"It's gorgeous. Honestly, I'm honored to be serving at St. Patrick's," the dark haired priest responded as he shook the man's hand. "It has such a long and rich history, I find it inspirational. And the community has been profoundly welcoming, just as you said they would be Mr. Farthing."
"Please, Father, call me Arnold," the man said, smiling as he lifted a hand to his head and brushed his wispy white hair back behind one ear. "Glad to hear your getting along well. Now where did you tell me that your last assignment was? California? New Mexico?"
"California, northern California," Gabriel answered, his voice not betraying the slight cringe he felt.
"Father, I believe it's time for Confession," a mousy voice called from just behind the slender priest's shoulder.
"Thank you, sister," Gabriel responded, glancing back at his short, brown eyed, brown haired assistant, Eunice. "Duty calls, I look forward to seeing you at services this week, Mr. Fathing."
"Arnold," the man responded, still smiling.
"Yes, Arnold," Gabriel responded with an apologetic smile as he excused himself and moved quietly toward the confessional. He slipped in and took a seat, composing himself as he waited for the first member of the parish to enter the small confessional opposite the thin wall beside which he was sitting.
A few moments passed before the door opened and then quickly closed. There was a soft rustling, then the small door in the center of the wall slid open and Gabriel heard a voice...
"Forgive me father for I have sinned..."
