Hi there. I know you shouldn't use oil based lube with condoms, but if you're masturbating or using a toy, is it safe to use oil like vasaline or baby oil as lube for butt sex? I ask because someone (who said she was a doctor) told me oil coated the inside of the rectum, harboured bacteria and caused infections. I've researched and read some articles on the net and lots of them seem to recommend oil based stuff like vasaline and don't mention the infection risk.

So is it safe? Was my friend misinformed?

Thanks muchly.

I forget that sex Dr's name who is on the tube. On one of her shows, she discussed this topic and said essentially, as long as the product is sterile, oil based was safe. She discussed the fact that germs and bacteria were introduced by fingers, tongue and the penis. In her opinion, clean was the best.

You're fine using oil- or petroleum-based lubes for masturbation with a silicone toy. Personally, I wouldn't want a perishable food product like butter or refined petroleum up my ass, but guys have been using things like Crisco and Vaseline for many years without incident. To be extra safe, you might want to use something like olive/almond oil or a commercial oil-based lube like Boy Butter. Containers that pour or pump are preferable like Webber said.

Be sure you're not near any material (sheets, clothing) you like when you use oil-based products, as they'll get permanently stained.

What butter and petroleum products are unsafe for is vaginal. Then you have a real risk of infection and general nastiness. But, that obviously doesn't apply to male masturbation. :D

Thanks SweetErika, I forgot...about the staining.

An extra towel is in order.

You should not use anything chocolate for lubricant, since though it tastes great, it doesn't look appetising in that particular area of the human body...

Thanks everyone. All this time I've been thinking it's a no no. I used to use olive oil years ago but stopped because of what my "doctor" friend said. But now I'll go back to it.
