Under the Wire, Condit Files for Re-Election

ODESTO, Calif., Dec. 7 — Representative Gary A. Condit, a California Democrat dogged by scandal since the disappearance of a Washington intern, filed today to seek re-election to Congress next year.
"I'm running," Mr. Condit said as he entered the Stanislaus County Courthouse.
First elected in 1989, Mr. Condit kept silent on his plans until 45 minutes before the deadline to file. He faces a primary battle against a longtime prótége, Dennis Cardoza.
After seven terms, Mr. Condit's hold on the Congressional seat was shaken when the 24-year-old intern for the Bureau of Prisons in Washington, Chandra Ann Levy, disappeared in May. Ms. Levy is from Mr. Condit's district and questions mounted about her connection to the married, 54-year-old congressman.
Mr. Condit kept silent publicly for more than three months, finally giving a series of interviews in which he acknowledged a "very close" relationship with Ms. Levy but denied involvement in her disappearance.
The police have said they do not consider Mr. Condit a suspect. They interviewed him four times and
