computer running so slow!

a friend of my boyfriends parents said he would do it for 75$.
Not 75 an hour but total.
It is an easy $75 for him, because it is pretty easy to do, but I guess if you dont know what you are doing, then it is money well spent. I personally try all the scans first, if that doesnt work then reformat. I would use CCleaner, super Anti-spy, Ad-aware and AVG. What do you have to lose, they are all free.

Like I said before......................

XP and Vista have a "system restore" feature built in. There is a hidden partition on the hard drive containing the operating system and will take your machine back to it's original setup. Like right out of the box.

I backed up all my porn files LOL;) and ran the program. Got me a brand new machine in just 10 or 15 minutes.

yep i have done that too, its really easy and quick , but seems to me that cherry isnt really interested in a solution that she may have to do herself:rolleyes:

i am interested, but i'm not computer savvy so would take forever.
and i dont have time to sit on the computer for hours.

How to get a squeaky clean PC - i do this every few months.

1-Back everything you want to keep to an external drive.
2-Format the PC. Press del on start-up to open up your BIOS, select boot from CD, insert your Vista CD. This will make your PC completely fresh, and everything from your old system would be in a file named windows.old
3- You can drag and drop stuff out that will be clean from this old system - ie media/pics/videos
4- Reload stuff from your external Hard drive, drag and drop. Simple.
5-Update drivers on your hardware. Vista does this for you, sooo good.

But the BIG BIG BIG thing for security, is to NEVER click on links. The culprits are, seedy porn sites - ESPECIALLY galleries. Anything with a strange file ending.

Internet explorer is chronic for getting shit on your PC without permission. You REALLY want to download firefox, as well as an addon called No-Script. That means that when you navigate to a site, you dont give it permission to download stuff to you.

Example time - i navigate to a site, theres a list like this. I can right click site-i-want-to-be-at.com, and allow only that site. Therefore, random shit is not allowed access to my internet browser.

Site-i-want-to-be-at.com
SHITTY ADVERTISING SITE-
OBNOXIOUS BANNER ADS
linkylinklinks.omghaxyou.ca.wv
trackingcookies
pop-up-traps
legit-looking-error-message

This is most useful. I thoroughly, thoroughly recommend firefox and noscript

it doesnt take hours n its very simple!!! try something instead of sitting there looking at it ffs!
you ask for help then turn down every suggestion!

i'm not turning down the suggestions, i'm trying to figure a way that i can do them.
I was told to partition - i have been looking online for ways to use the partition.
I've tried the scans - got rid of norton, and put avg on.
I tried putting firefox on here, but somehow managed to mess that up, now i cant find it lol ran out of time so didnt try reinstalling it.

FIND - Firefox. the find function is in your start menu, if its vista its a box at the bottom of start menu, Firefox 3.5.2 is what youll be running.

Also get no-script.

If you're gonna format, make sure to set up two or even three partitions. One for the OS and the other one for the saved files. That way, when it goes wonkers again, you can format the OS partition and keep the saved files and settings.

Of course, this is an excellent time to give linux a try. Ubuntu, anyone? =)

Buy hey, be carefull just tossing all his porn. If he left you with his computer, and all it's files intact, then he must obviously trust you. Unless he just forgot he had gigs of porn on it, he probably thought you would not judge him for it. It's kind of a trust thing, ya know...? If he comes home to find it all gone, he might feel attacked over it. Be carefull there, m'kay?

lol the porn thing- i find amusing actually.
He knows i didnt mind him looking at porn - - He was hours away for months, on a base out of state, so i actually encouraged it and even sent him a few videos that i liked.
Before i left i made a joke of it, "dont leave me your computer full of porn"
and what ya know - he did lol I told him i was gonna delete it, my son, who is 4, gets on the computer to play his hot wheels games and mahjong---i'm not gonna chance him finding the few gigs full of buttsex. lol

Have you considered creating your son his own, very restricted user account (maybe w/ a hot wheels icon, or some other picture he chooses, and his name) and making sure he knows he's never allowed to touch/use the computer at all unless he asks and you tell him it's okay? Or have you already done those things?

If not, I'd think it'd be helpful to instill those good habits now so he's less likely to screw things up and get in trouble or have issues with computer limitations down the road. :)

he always has to ask before getting on the computer, he knows how to get to the hotwheels site and even nickjr.com-i have them bookmarked on the desktop. I showed him they were there once and i havent seen him click on anything else since.
I never thought of making him a restricted user account, that would be an awesome idea. then i can keep more games on for him and not worry about him clicking the wrong icon, and parental control it easier.

Norton and McAfee suck ass. Vista sucks ass. IE 8 REALLY sucks ass.
Try PC TOOLS Virus Scan. There's a free version. Switch your browser to Firefox. And find SuperAntiSpyware. It's free too and works better than most.

Or build your next computer and put a Linux distribution (most are 100% FREE, as are the programs) on it. With either WINE or a dual-boot with Windows, you can still play WoW, no problem. You don't have to worry about viruses and spyware with Linux, either.

That'd be a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a Mac. :)

I would like to echo Erika's comments. With Linux you are free of viruses. worms, trojans, OS crashes, and defragmentation. It doesn't gradually slow down with time as Windows does either due to Window's awful registry system. You will get a big increase in speed over Vista and an easier to install and maintain system in general.

I would also agree with her advice about Firefox. IE is one of the biggest security holes in Windows. If you can't bring yourself to try something new Install Firefox and adblock.

If you want help with a Linux install and getting up and running feel free to ask.

helpful info guys my sisters cpu runs vista and it jacked so i am gonna try this

I can't help but be reminded of an old joke:

"The box said 'requires Windows XP or better' so I installed Linux." :D

And to add another affirmation to those that have already mentioned it: get firefox.
