I downloaded the latest service pack for XP, and now all the type on my screen looks weird, like the font got changed to skinny sorta broken letters. Even "start" in bottom left corner looks zagged. How can I fix this? I tried going to "View" on toolbar and changing size but it did not fix anything. I know there is a cure cause it did this once months ago and somehow I stumbled onto the fix.But I'll be danged if I remember what the heck I did.

Thanks for the help. shy

I don't use XP, so I don't know where to find it, but...

Windows 98 has default language and font settings that can cause that sort of problem. They're in the Control panel and easily identified. The "Accessibility Options" can cause some strange effects as well.

With Win 98 is usually requires rebooting when you change a default system setting before it takes effect.

Thanx WH,

I went to control panel and tried to figure out what was default font but couldn't find it. The trouble is it is very hard to read with this zagged thin type. I know I'm missing something here ...

Another possibility is the display settings -- in the advanced section (at least for my video card) there are settings for retrace rates and other technical gobbledy-gook. If the settings don't match your monitor, the effect can be what you describe. SP2 may have had something in it that upset your display/monitor settings.

was it service pack 2 that you downloaded for xp?

i had a monitor problem after i downloaded it - about 4 inches on the left side of my monitor was completely black and the right side was cut-off - i was able to correct it by switching the monitor settings that are on the monitor itself - i haven't had any more problems with it

you can change the dpi settings for the font by going to control panel - change screen resolution - advanced - general tab - change dpi setting

you can set the font size by going to control panel - change screen resolution - appearance

good luck

This Might help you solve the problem, but I'm just guessing here.

Right click on the desk top & go to properties. Then on the Appearance Tab , you can change the font size and/or windows and buttons.
Then click on the Settings Tab. Here you can change the Screen Resolution. Whether it be 800 by 600 or 1124 by 768 etc.
Then click on Advance Button. Here you can change the DPI setting. Normal setting is 96 DPI.

Hope this helps

Hi Princess, yup it was service pak2 that did it. I tried changing dpi and it didn't fix it. Or I didn't do it right. I find it weird that the "start" icon is screwed up too. It's not smooth edged and readable like it used to be. I'm guessing the problem is in the screen resolution or setup, but I'll be danged if I can make it better. I did make it a whole lot worse at one point, I CAN do that!!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Right click where? I tried changing dpi, and default monitor setting, and size. The zagged edges remain each time. I'll get some sandpaper and fix em tonite. :D

Thanks for the help.
