Ok So I have some bad file making me get bombarded with pop ups. I have found the file and I am trying to delete it. When I try to delete it I get a message that says "Make sure disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use." How do I delete this file?

Reboot in Safe Mode and try to delete it there.

If that doesn't work, boot from a emergency boot floppy and try deleting it through the DOS. DEL command.

If it won't delete in DOS, then type ATTRIB <filename> -r-a-s-h and try the DEL command again.

OK so another stupid question... How do I start in safe mode?

On most PCs, hold down the control key and turn your computer on. You'll get a menu of boot options that includes Safe Mode.

Some PCs sitill require that you catch it at just the right moment in the boot sequence by pressing F8 to get the boot menu.

Youcan aso go to Start -> Run and enter MSCONFIG. On the Advanced Tab, chck "show startup menu" and click OK.

When you reboot, you'll get the startup or boot menu until you go back and turn the startup menu off.

I'd try to delete in in the processes tab using ctr alt del first. A lot easier that way.

i have found the best tool for removing pop up trojan horses/browser hijackers is cwshredder.

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

is where you can download. it get's rid of most of them out there. Once that is done you want to run either adaware or spybot to remove other items left on your machine.

Then another very important step is from your Start button on your machine - go to Windows Update and update all security things on there.

Also Anti-Virus software. It is crazy how much stuff you need to prevent and repair these days, but these should fix most problems.

if you are running WindowsXP you have the "System Restore" option that hopefully could restore your system to a date prior to the date that this file was installed. This may be more comfortable to you to use. The Safe-Mode boot-up can be a tad bit tricky... but not difficult at all... I have to keep hitting the F8 key repeatedly to get the OS options (black screen). Newer systems may be different.

good luck:)
