They can find out your IP address, which can lead to them knowing roughly where you live. If they have your IP address and can persuade you to open something (which may be automatic, without your knowledge, like these pics would've been), then they can sneak in software with that and basically pick up anything you enter onto your computer. Passwords, card numbers, etc.
Get "Spybot:Search And Destroy" for free off the internet and buy a good antivirus and firewall.

Depends, some of them automatically send on the e-mails, whereas some are just sent out from source remailers. Spybot's good as 9 times out of 10 it'll stop the download of nasties and those that it can't stop, it'll find if you search once a week or so.
