Ok...I've been trying to Defrag my computer...everytime it gets to 10% it stops and says: Drive Contents Changed: Restarting...this has been going on for HOURS!!! :(

Anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong or how to fix something like this???

Are you running any programs while you defrag? It sounds like it's running into a section of the drive that gets used...and therefore it has to restart, because things aren't where it was expecting them to be. You should do your defrag when you're not using your machine.

if you're running an anti-virus program, it may be checking every file that's opened ... so defrag accesses a file and the av software checks it and you get caught in a vicious cycle ... (lol, mine would stall at 10% too) ... disable av, if you're running it, and turn it back on after you defrag ...

i'd recommend turning screen savers off too ...

I would suggest if you havnt already done it run a scandisk. Defrag will probably want to do it anyway.

But reboot your computer as Girl has suggested and as your computer is booting hold down the shift key, this will skip all of the start-up programs and prevent a background program from running and restarting the defrag.

Also, make sure to turn of your screensaver. It counts as a program too. Basically disable anything you can think of.

I quite often defrag in Safemode I find it works well, and I have heard some recommend it. I have not really noticed much f a difference though, ussually a minimal amount of drivers and such are loaded so it may help in theory.

It it's always at the same point

Odds are very good your screensaver is kicking in, or something unfortunate like that. Could be a logfile if you run something like ZoneAlarm or BlackIce, could be the windows update notifier, so the advice is good... disconnect from the net, make sure almost nothing is running (you can check your task manager if you know enough) and make sure the screensaver isn't set to come on.

Good luck

Run Defrag in Safe mode so that all other programs are shut down.

You will still get the drive contents changed notice at about ten percent complete when defragging C: because defrag writes to the c: drive at about that point in the process to update something. (I figured out which file it was updating once, but have forgotten which it is.)

Try deleting your Internet history and temp files before running defrag. That reduces the work to be done because those files should be "after" files that won't be changing every time you use the computer.

The more often you defrag your drive, the less of a problem this "undocumented feature" is because there is less moving of files to do before it hits the point where it updates the file and starts over.

Ahh thank you for reminding me to defrag my hard drive when i get home!

Thanks for all the help everybody:) finally got it to work...although I tried it in safe mode and it told me the defrag done an illegal action??? Dunno what that was...but I finally got it :) Ya'll are wonderfull :)
