not sure if this is in the right place but ill try it. i have 2 computers both with the same op system winxp media center edition. 1 comp has powerdvd 6 the other has powerdvd 5 that i paid for through microsoft web site it didnt come with it or wasnt installed when it was built. ok my problem is when i backup my dvd to my hard drive it dosnt convert the vidieo_ts files to mpeg on the comp with the powerdvd 5 on it. what could be the problem do i need to go to a newer version of powerdvd. the other computer works fine with no problems at all. the programs i use to back up my dvd's are dvdfab decryptor and dvd shrink.

Silly question, perhaps, but have you looked through the preferences to ensure that the program knows to Save As Mpegs? Also, does that version of PowerDVD have the ability to convert to mpeg or perhaps it doesn't? Is it a trial version that will only unlock the Save As Mpeg function upon payment?

Check the differences in the two programs. The ability to save to mpeg may be a feature of version 6. In which case, if the two computers are on a network, I'd just call the PowerDVD 6 when backing up DVDs and use the other system for either storage or playback (or upgrade from version 5 to 6).

backing them up?

why use a commercial POS?

CCCP is community codec pack thats actually not virus ridden or highly outdated that includes free players that are far superior to the commercial counterparts
unless you're trying for HD-DVD or BluRay

and backing them up

look for ripit4me
dvd decrypter
fixvts
and
dvd shrink

that'll do all the work for you and clean up the disk at the same time
