Computer HELP!

A Lit friend of mine can no longer access the site for some unknown reason. He can't even "ping" it, but he DOES get email notifications.

He's running Windows XP and has both IE and Firefox (which he just loaded to see if that would help). His internet is DSL, and yes, he can access other sites -- just not Lit. He also runs a spy/malware program.

Can anyone help?

It could be blocked by his ISP or he may just need to put it on his allowed list for internet security.

Thanks, Ezzy. He's going to check the security thingie when he gets home from work.

Any and all other suggestions would be more than welcome. The last time he could access was 9th January and no changes to the computer.

If it worked on the 9th, he can always do a restore point back to before the 9th.

BEFORE HE DOES THAT, MAKE SURE ANY FILES HE WANTS TO KEEP ARE IN HIS MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER.

After that, just click system restore, and he should be running good again.

if that doesnt work, let me know what error message he gets if he tries getting to lit through a broser.

As far as I know, he gets that page cannot be displayed thingie. Not a "you dont have access". Like I said above, he can't even ping Lit.

The restore trick should work assuming he knows for sure that he was able to get here on the 9th.

Okay, here's the scoop...

Don't seem to be able to get System Restore to work. Whenever I pick a restore point it tells me that it couldn't restore from it.

I checked the hosts thing out - but no joy there. I couldn't add Lit to my trusted sites because it doesn't use a secure connection, but I checked it wasn't blocked. It wasn't.

The following is the error message...

Okay, here's the scoop...

I couldn't add Lit to my trusted sites because it doesn't use a secure connection, but I checked it wasn't blocked. It wasn't.

I don't recall where the settingis, but the truste sites Zone can be set to accept sites that don't use a secure connection.

One possibility that has't been mentioned is the "Content Advisor" (aka "Parental Controls") setting. I've had my system occasionally turn on the Content Advisor for no apparent reason and block access to some sites without giving a notice or warning that they're blocked -- I just get the "Cannot Find Server" page.

The inability to restore suggests a virus or malware that is blocking the restore function and/or virus checking -- an online scan like Trendmicro's Housecall might turn up something that shouldn't be on his system.

XP's built-in firewall might also be the problem -- either interfering with an after-market firewall or on it's own.

try running a traceroute.

go to the command prompt and type

tracert www.literotica.com

If something is blocking his access, like his ISP, or the ISP's DNS provider, you'll see it make a few hops, and then start timing out.

It could be that your ISP is having issues with its DNS, and until they get a refreshed DNS you'll be blocked. They could have blacklisted the IP for Lit, thinking it was spam or some such nonesense.

Do you know what firewall he's running? He may have inadvertently blocked the IP address to Lit without knowing it. I did the same thing several months ago. My firewall, Black Ice Defender, was complaining about a certain IP address without giving the ".com" name. I blocked it (216.169.118.69) without looking it up. Starting having problems accessing Lit (didn't associated it right away with the IP block because I didn't try to get on for a few days). After several days of not being able to access the site, saw a tip somewhere on the 'net about checking my firewall. Sure enough, after I got rid of the block, I was able to access the site again.

Sorry I haven't gotten back here. All messages have been passed on, but between a heavy workload and offline stuff, Steiner has been too busy to just sit down and concentrate on his computer.

I promise to let you know what happens. I think the next step is to download HiJack.
