I have had a new laptop since about September. I love it, but I have a problem with my old laptop. When I first got my new one, I was transferring a lot of my music files over to CDs to I can put them on the new laptop. I have had a problem with my old laptop which is a Dell Inspirion 4100. The charger does not work anymore so I can't charge the battery so I can burn the rest of my music files to CDs and put on the new laptop. I was wondering if there is something I can do where I can take my old laptop and get the music files I want off the hard drive?

Ummm... take the battery out of you new laptop, but it in the old one and burn the music you need to xfer to cd? Or, goto a reputable dealer, buy a new battery, rinse and repeat then take the new battery back for a refund? Can't you just plug it up to a wall adapter directly?

The battery works I think, but the charger and adpater is screwed up. If I can wiggle a few wires it can work, but I can't move. I tried to charge it awhile ago, but if it loses the AC power it is over. Don't know what to to do. Thanks for advice.

It sounds lke you've got a break in the wires -- probably right at the back of the plug to the laptop.

A new plug is about $0.98 at Radio Shack and is fairly simple to replace.

If you don't feel competent to replace it yourself, any electronics or elecrical repair shop should be able to replace the connector for whatever their minimum fee is.

You could have a bad power receptacle in the laptop and those can be more difficult to repair or replace, but from your description, a "flex break" at the back of the power plug sounds more likely.

Thanks Weird Harold. This would the third charger I would have brought for that laptop which is a Dell Inspirion 4100. That's why I got the new one and with the fact the 4100 was over 4 years old.

I know you can go to like Staples and buy a new ac adaptor. I had this problem with my old compaq....didn't help i dropped it then tried to save it by pulling on the ac cord...anyway...the only thing with those is that I think they're pretty expensive. 30 bucks or so...
