Okay, I need some help here. This concerns my computer at work. While on the internet last Friday (slow day) I was clicking through on some page or another and clicked on something evil. Don't know what, but ever since when I reboot the computer and open up my browser, the Home Page is now some teen porn site(free-lola or some damn thing). After about 30 seconds five more windows open up. If I close them, go into Tools>Internet Options and change my Home Page to Google, everything works fine until the next time I reboot. Due to the CAD/CAM programs I use I shut the computer down every night, so rebooting is a daily occurance.

Obviously I am missing something. I have run into sites that change your Home Page before, but it was a one-time fix. Any ideas?

Technical data: HP computer (433Mhz Celeron), OS is Windows98, browser is IE5.5. Other than the CAM program, there is no other software loaded that didn't come with the computer. One other thing, downloaded software solutions are next to impossible with the crappy phone lines we have here (max speed is 24k).

I'm off to bed now but I will check this thread tomorrow from work. Any and all solutions will be much appreciated.

Easy fix!

On your browser go to Tools > Internet Options

Type in a new home page.

Apply.

Ok

Voila!

:D

He's already tried that, but when he reboots the old page shows up as his home page.

(I had to read it twice too) :)

Okay, so I can't read.

This isn't the first time. It won't be the last.

I.. um... Dunno?

:D

Sorry.

Scampers away.

Maybe clearing your cookies/ cache/ history first? Then do the tools/ internet option/ new home page thing.

That happened to me once.

This happened to me once on a site called " go hip " - very dodgy - they have some devious programme that always defalts to their home page whenever you reboot even if you change it manually.

You also cant remove the programme the normal way a la add/remove programmes. Eventualy I was on a site that had a patch that I downloaded and it got rid of the bug.

Still dont know the answer, but it was a real pain . Maybe if he does a search under the name of the site he might find some other people who have the same problem and find a patch that will debug it - worth a shot

That didnt work with me - If it is the same sort of "trojan" programe it is in your windows systems under a nondescript name - usually just a lot of numbers

If it is the same he either has to isolate the programe under an explore search - the problem is that he might get rid of something that is needed

I had a problem like that and it had to do with some wino.txt files I think. If I find the directions that I had I will try to post them. If they weren't wino txt they were wino something else.

You might be able to use the find function to look for all executable files (*.exe, *.com) created on the date that it happened. If you see one you don't recognize, use a virus scanner to quarantine it, or rename it to .bak, reboot it, and see what happens.

Good call - you could also put your PC into your microwave oven for 4 minutes only under medium power

This will work for sure

<picks up computer and starts walking towards microwave>

Waaaaiiiit a minute!

There's no way this thing's fittin' in my microwave! :D

It sounds like a program has been loaded into 'Start Up.'

Try this, go to:

Accessories

System Tools

System Information

Tools

System Configuration

Start Up

Is there anything in Start Up that you don't recognise ? You need to disable it.

You have to be careful here because these are the programs that automatically start when you boot up, some are crucial.

Usually the most recently loaded programs are at the top of the list. Basically, if you are sure there is a program there that isn't supposed to be, 'un-check' the tick box. That program will not come live when you Start Up again.

(If you're not sure don't disable it !)

I'm gonna have to open up LITs first PC TEch Shop.

District Line had right, but theres an easier way.

Open Start menu, click Run, and type (msconfig) without brackets
Click start-up tab and disable everything apart from

Scanreg
TaskMonitor
Systemtray
LoadpowerProfile
SchedulingAgent

and anything that relates to your anti-virus software.

Hope this helps

This screams of the Klez-Worm virus to Me. If you cant run your AV soft-ware, you're machine is infected.

What happened to your PC is called hijacking. Here's a couple links to help, or search google for "hijacked home page"

In a professional capacity, I can not recommend you microwaving your PC. That said, I find a good hard belt with a hammer (while not helping the PC any) helps the user immensely. :D

Cool

Now if I had all this knowledge last year I could have got rid of my hijacker - they didnt give me any demands such as take me to cuba or anything - just hung around my PC

This only works if you have Windows set to view the file extensions (which by default it is not).

Good advice tho....

To turn on the file extensions, open Windows Explorer (not I E)
go to View, Folder Options, View tab and un-check the mark in "Hide File Extensions for known file types" and then also check "Show all files" button as well.

Thanks to all who replied, I have printed this thread and will try some of the things listed. I have gone into 'msconfig' on my home computer so I will start there first.

I'm off to work, I'll be back later with an update.
