Here's the deal.
A friend of mine gave me a Logitech webcam. I went to hook it all up, and then it tells me i need the windows98 start up disk. I went to where i keep all my computer stuff, and it wasn't there. I looked everywhere..no luck. So..Do i have to go get a new start up disk for my computer..my pc is 4yrs old  or is there somewhere online i can get it or is there a webcam on the market that doesn't need a start up disk that i could go buy??
Could someone help me out??

Thanks,
Cipher.

First, the setup program isn't asking for a Windows 98 startup disk, it is asking for your Windows 98 installation disk with all the Win98 drivers on it. The webcam setup is looking for some specific driver program to match the cam to your system.

Second, many of the web cams available on the market today will ask for your Windows start up disk for drivers because, with the proliferation of operating systems, computer configurations and so on, providing a specific driver set puts the manufacturer in an awkward position.

There are some web cams on the market that do provide all the drivers needed. They tend to be more expensive. I have a Creative Cam Blaster that had all the drivers included. A better solution would be to procure a Windows 98, or Windows 98 Upgrade installation disk. Either will work.

If you need more specifics, PM me.

You can just go here and download the correct driver for your camera. That way you won't need the Windows 98 disk at all.

I went and downloaded it, and it sent me back to sqaure one..
"Please insert windows start up second edition disk to continue"..
I'll have to track someone down with a start up disk or just go get a webcam that doesn't need a start up disk.

Thanks for the link :)

The installation process is checking for a Windows function that isn't enabled -- USB drivers or something like that -- whichthe camera drive needs to interface with.

There is a *.INF file on the webcam driver disk that determines what files are required for the webcam to work. It is a plain text file and can be edited with Notepad, WordPad, or any word processer that can save a file in plain text or msdos text format.

Open that file and find the file it needs from the Windows disk and manually place it where the install process is checking for it.

You'll probably have to do some research on the web for the format and syntax of the INF files to determine what files are required and do a manual installation.

Sometimes the installation process can be pretty stupid and will try to reinstll a Windows feature that is already enabled and all you'll need to do is edit out the offending portion of the file.

Npe, I don't have a webcam and don't have anyplans to acquire one, so I haven't done any research on how they interface and what drivers are needed.

Googling for webcam reviews should turn up a camera that doesn't require a windows installation disk.
