Okay, so I'm trying to clean stuff off my h/d and I run into these..I have no idea what they are or if I can delete them and not screw everything up as I am prone to do from time to time.

Help!

Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v 1.3.1
" " " " " " " " v140_01

Do I need both?

MicroSoft Works - can I delete this? I have Office 2000, will it affect that?

Java WebStart????
Live Update Symantec?????
Restore Winsock Config??????????

I am so lost, I need a map, 3 bloodhounds and a search party.

Leave the java

Use the uninstall to remove works.

Symantec, unless you're running a firewall from them, you can delete it

Leave winsock

hope that helps, im sure other know more than I do.

No you don't need both.
not sure about Works with Ofice 2000.
Java WebStart is a web page builder
Symantec is Norton anti virus, if you have another anti-virus you don't need it
Don't get rid of Restore Winsock Config, thats so you can use System Restore if you do smething wrong and need to restore your comp.
hope this helps!

Remember when you delete Works that there will likely be shared files. Like clip art and that sorta crap. Make sure you actually have the Office 2000 disk before uninstalling Works so that you can reinstall those shared componants as they come up.

Also, re-save anything that's a Works document as a word doc before you do it. I'm pretty darned sure Word will just open them, but with MS sometimes you just never know. ;)

Thanks everyone!

Nora, I never use/used works for anything it's just here. I recently installed Office 2000, so I assume it should be okay.

Thanks much :)

OKay..one last...WHICH Java Enviro thingy do I keep?

These programs that you have take up very little memory. It wouldn't hurt to leave them for now. More importantly, you don't want these programs running all the time cause that DOES effect your pc's performance.

Make sure they are not running. I use a program called foxstartup that controls the programs that run in the background. Those are the ones that screw with your speed.

Regardless of what operatinf system you have, if you haven't installed much software on your pc, you should only have about 5 programs running.

To check this, hit control alt delete and see what programs are running

Although, the latest version is 1.4.2_02, so you could technically delete both and get the latest version. ;)

Hey Gwen, notice how the guys try to make even more work for you? :D

LOL! Typical. Yet another reason women should be running things..simple, easiest ways of doing things ;) THanks Hon.

When I try to delete works, it's asking me about word 6.0?

Oh well, if I delete it and it screws up, I'll just reinstall Office .

Hrmm...I do believe Word 6.0 is WordPad in your accessories (start-->program files->accessories--->wordpad). I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you don't use it.

Seriously though, are you trying to make room just cuz of spring cleaning or are you experiencing any technical difficulties?

Ah..okay.

Spring cleaning and just find it a little slow for some reason, could be the ISP, but..cleaning is good too!

*nods* i did mine in January.

If you type msinfo32 into the "run" dialogue box (start-->run-->msinfo32) then click on the running programs and start up programs under software environment, you'll find a lot of stuff that can probably go.

My ISP has felt really slow lately, even when it's swearing up and down that we're connected at the same speed we always are. It's probably just web traffic induced lag from everyone checking CNN.

Yep, weekly and I dump my temporary files and all frequently too.

Thanks :)

**HUGS** you're a sweetheart.

Thankyou.

You're welcome. =) Actually, I'm sitting here at work wishing people would call. I do tech support for a living. *grins*

umm ... i dont think Word 6 is the same as wordpad.

I seem to recall some versions of MS Works were bundled with Word ... but in any case, if you uninstall Works, the worst case is that you'll have to re-install Word from the Office 2000 CD.

I think you're right. What made me think that is if you save a wordpad doc and then open it with word, when you close it it tells you that it's a word 6.0 doc and would you like to save it as a word 9x/2k doc. I think that works word processor might just be 6.0. I'm too lazy to search and figure out if that's the case, though.

In fact, they take up NO memory unless they run, which in the case of works and the previous version of java strikes me as completely unlikely given what else you've said. They also don't use MUCH space on the harddrive, but good housekeeping helps disk storage so use that uninstall control panel and plow em under. Worst case with the shared files you may have to reinstall the clip art or something from your Office 2000 install media, no big deal.

Nora's got you on the right track, if I know anything about tending bar.

Before you go to all of that trouble run a program like AdAware
to clean out at least some of the spyware. That helps alot.

How much do you know about your computer because you can go to start, run, type in msconfig then click on start up and un check tons of junk that cranks up with your computor...at least in win 98se.
The thing is if you don't know what it is don't uncheck it.

Disconnecting your keyboard, system tray and a couple of other things can suck big time.
