The "Heads up" first.

When you download and install Windows XP Service Pack 1 the Outlook Express icon will disappear from your desktop. You will need to set up another shortcut to open OE if you use it for your primary mail program. If you access OE another way, through Internet Explorer or your "Home page", don't worry. The program is still there, only the shortcut icon is gone.

Problem!!

Since upgrading my computer I've received two messages with attachments that I can not access. An attached picture is visible in both the "Preview" and when I open the message. Two attached or forwarded files (jokes) are not accessible. The "paperclip" icon in preview yields only grayed out text in both cases, and when I open either message there is a light yellow banner below the toolbar that states "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: XXXXX."

I sent a picture to a friend who has also updated and she does not have the problem with attachments but had lost her OE icon! Any suggestions?

Could it be seeing the attachments as viruses?

Sometimes the "joke" programs will pop up as viruses on your computer.

If you have your email set up so that your anti virus scans it first, that maybe whats happening.

Try tools options then security...there is an option that allows OE to remove attachments. Uncheck it.

Good point, I run Norton AV and it scans both incoming and outgoing mail and attachments but this indicates that it is "Outlook Express" that has removed the attachments. The really odd thing is that it removed the attached picture but because I'm set to "View attached jpgs" it is there, both in the preview and the open message.

I just went into security and "unchecked" the box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened.....". It might be that the security levels in SP 1 are seeing EVERY attachment as a possible virus holder. I'll have to get a friend to send me a file now.
