Does anyone know of a program that keeps you connected to the internet? I keep getting disconnected for inactivity.. the bastards.

I've tried a program called Tosser but either it doesn't work or I can't figure it out.

What do you use?

I use Neoplanet as my browser and have it set up to reconnect me after a disconnect. Works quite well. I never have to worry about reconnecting. I love it. :)

With a name like Tosser...

it's probably designed to keep you off the net!

:)

Serious chat now...

I was having the same trouble with my dial-up. In fact my ISP would cut me off if I was online too long!

Now changed broadband for an extra £5 per month ($3) and don't have that trouble no more.

Have ever thought about it. Your on line all the time. And the speed is a-fantastic...

When I was on AOL, I used Idletech. I loved the program. Dont know if it works with the newer ones though.

If I need to keep mine running I leave my MSN on....it's ocnstantly in contact with the server so data keeps going back and forth and no inactivity.

I dont know how to find the particular thread, because the search engine on this site is a mystery to me. But Barb Dwyer asked a similar question on the "How To" Board a few months ago. Some of the ideas people put up there might help

Check you Dial-up settings. There's a box for "idle disconnect". Make sure it's not checked. (I think it IS checked as a default setting). I did this, and I never get disconnected, and I leave mine idle for hours at a time.

Yup... That would be it... You can change all the settings from there, and you shouldn't get kicked off...

Your provider is doing that to you - they have a script running that automatically logs you off after a certain amount of inactivity so that they free up their phone lines. If its available in your area, and you can afford it, your best bet is to get a high-speed connection like cable or DSL where you're online all the time. Not only will you not get disconnected but everything will load and download faster.

Barring that - what you need to do is to fool your provider into not thinking you're inactive. As you mentioned, there are some programs that will help you do that.

Try these out:

If you're not happy with any of these just go to http://download.cnet.com and search for more - or try http://www.tucows.com

Ok, did that... now to see if it works. :D

Dill, as always you manage to come up with what I was looking for... I just hope I don't need it now. lol

Thank you everyone.

:)

Instead of downloading a bunch of crap that is going to run in the background and use memory, why not just leave your email account running in the background, with the setting to check email every minute or so. That's what i used to do before DSL and i never got cut off.
