Computer annoyances....anyone know the fix?

I've got Windows 98 SE. Over the past couple months I've acquired a couple of annoyances I'd like to get rid of. If anyone knows how I'd appreciate it.

First, I downloaded a program that wants to load every time I sign into my desktop. I don't want to get rid of it altogether but I don't want it to load automatically. I removed it from the start up menu (as someone had suggested to me) but it still comes up. Where do I go to stop it from loading on it's own?

Second, a while ago when I was having some probs a tech (on the phone) had me set something so that when my pc boots up it goes to a menu that askes if I want to start windows in regular mode, safe mode, or some other options. It slows up my boot time considerably and I'd like to get back to where it skips this part but can't remember where the tech had me go to set it up like this in the first place.:(

Any ideas?

Likely the downloaded software has a "preferences" or "options" category that will allow you to deselect "Start when computer boots"

The Selection menu could have been assigned in either the autoexec file, or config.sys, both in your C:\ root directory.

ty....is this something I could find using Windows Explorer?

Does Yahoo IM has preference/set up too? I can't seem to find one.

It does CV... right click on the Yahoo icon beside your time/date icon. Preferences should be on the list. You'll need to have IM connected to the net to chage the settings though.

That's my prob....Yahoo IM. No preferences under properties and I can't find anything anywhere else.

Had the same problem with my son's IM (I think it was AOL) and found a start on start-up type menu that listed all my programs but it was a while ago and I don't know how to get back there.

Yeah!!!!

That was it. I had to log in to get the preferences active. Good thing I remembered my password. Probably could have just uninstalled but oh, well. This works. Thanks.

At least that one won't be slowing down my log-in to Lit anymore.:D

Dear, its under General, after you click on preferences. UNselect the first option, "when I log into my computer, automatically start Yahoo Messenger".

Hope that is what you mean?

In Windows NT there is a boot.ini file that can be edited to control this, also there is a setting somewhere in the GUI that controls this, but I can't find it right off the bat.

Weed,

go to the start button and click "run"

type Msconfig.exe and hit ok

on the general tab, click "normal startup" then ok and see if that helps.

edited to add: This is related to your second question, obviously! :D

Got it. Guess I'm not the only one who's had to figure this out.

God bless you, Nora!!!! That was it.

Thanks, Heretic, but you lost this pc novice there.

Anyway....Nora's suggestion worked and I am now computer un-annoyed.

Or am I?;)

Obviously I am not a PC support or net admin person - I just know some stuff from having stumbled across it. Ask me how to do a singleton in C++ and I can answer, ask me how to admin a network and I have to muddle around looking for the settings.

If you want, post everything here that's checked off.

*smiles*

If you check "normal startup" those other options under "selective startup" get greyed out. The only options available if you were to choose selective startup would be

process autoexec.bat
process system.ini file
process win.ini file
load startup group items.

of those, the only one I wouldn't necessarily check is the last (startup group items), but it's easier just to take all the extraneous crap out of your startup folder.
