nothing worse than being home from school & being dragged along to family visits, often with distant cousins you barely remember.

Well, a couple of times, there were other people visiting at the same time... and lots of alcohol.

Imagine meeting a sweet young thing, both tiring of drinking games, the two of you both wander off, perhaps one to find a bathroom, the other just a quiert corner...you bump into each other outside your cousin's bedroom....

Interesting twist would be if just after doing the business, you both find out that you're closely related. Bigger twist would be if she then admits that she knew who you were before the two of you started screwing.

second cousins twice removed? whatever that means...

or is it more plausible if she's his brother's new gf from school, who bro brought home to meet the family?

Sad to say, I actually do know what this means. The ranking of the cousins have to do with the number of generations that seperate the person closest to the common relatives from said common relatives. i.e. if the common relatives are the person's grandparents, they are first cousins, if they are great-grandparents, they are second cousins, etc...

The times removed thing has to do with how many generations seperate the common relatives from the subject with the furthest relation to them. e.g. if your grandparents are also my grandparents, we are first cousins, no times removed. But if your grandparents are my great-grandparents, we are first cousins, once removed. If they are my great-great-grandparents we are first cousins, twice removed, etc.

Yeah, I know. I'm an uber nerd. I blame my mom. She's really in to that family tree research and she goes on about it a lot at family things.

More plausable, yes, but plausability doesn't always equate to great storytelling.

And my initial suggestion was quite plausable, too. I once went on a holiday with my folks and we stopped by an aunt whom I hadn't seen for years. She had three daughters, the youngest of whom was twelve years younger than the next-eldest. When I saw this teenage girl standing in the doorway behind my aunt, I assumed it was one of my two elder cousins, when suddenly I twigged... "Holy Shit! She's the young one!" I hadn't seen her since she was a todler and totally didn't recognise her as an almost-adult. If she wasn't in my aunt's house, I wouldn't have even suspected we were related.
