Complaints about stories being pending for ages

That's interesting. Since I am not on that site, I wouldn't be able to tell.

Maybe they’re on vacation. Would make sense before the Halloween contest starts.

It does make me wonder if they’ve ever enjoyed a nice long trip considering all the daily website demands. I’d hope so!

The Lit account on Bluesky liked and reposted one of my posts four days ago. It usually reposts anything that it's tagged into every day or two.

Regardless of what the reason is, I think Laurel and Manu deserve to take it easy once in a while. It might be frustrating for us as writers, but it would be selfish to demand immediate service all day, every day, all year round for 25+ years.

So @Laurel and @Manu, whatever's going on: I hope you're well and will continue to share this wonderful site with us for many more years to come.

(Although I'm hoping to submit a new story within a few more days, so if things could be back to normal next week, that would be great. :p)

I am worried about them, or Laurel more specifically. I hope this is just catching their breath, which they wholly deserve. Under any circumstances, this raises my single biggest complaint with the operation of the site, the poor communications. I doubt the readers notice much at all, but it obviously is an issue for us as authors. It would be hugely appreciated if they would just post a short note here saying, "Feeling under the weather, you may experience unusual delays." or whatever the issue is. I think that would be greatly appreciated, although I'm sure some here would complain about it in one way or another.

Funny how forum members tell people not to worry if their story is taking a long time and sometimes are rude about it.

But when it's their story? Oh, now this is a problem.

It is a problem. One that's been going on for some time, and never been addressed here by the site and with no resolution in sight.

To repeat forum advice: Deal with it.

My - wholly unfounded - speculation is that someone is not well; probably influenced by me having had COVID and bronchitis back to back. If so, I wish them a speedy recovery. But, yes, an announcement would be super helpful to set expectations.

I don't know. I submitted a story Wednesday and it posted this morning, which in my experience is a little faster than normal. That said,
  • I write mostly straight-ahead romance stories that don't require much vetting
  • I've been writing here since 2018, so I'm a known quantity
  • Before I hit the submission button, I make sure to spell out in the admin notes anything that may cause controversy or require a closer look
All of that may have something to do with it.

That said, people's publishing experiences here vary widely, and it's always possible that the site administrators are having tech or personal issues we know nothing about, as iwatchus and EmilyMiller pointed out.

Yup, as I say stories are posted every day. But there are too many data points where authors who have never experienced any delays are now doing so for this not to be notable. I hope it’s nothing worse than a bout of flu.

There have been 134 stories published today (9/20), which is well within the norm. Seems like the hubbub is mostly about some unduly privileged authors who are nonplussed that the red carpet before then has been furled.

A month ago, it was averaging 200/day. When I was looking to see last week for my how to, it was averaging 190 a day. This is a major drop off.

It's a very low number for Saturday, as far as I have seen. 200+ is the minimum for any day of the weekend, usually even 250+ or 300+. It's not business as usual for sure.
But I also agree that it's not something worth posting about, even if frustration is understandable. People usually tell all the newbies that it's fine if it takes more than ten days. And Lit has shown time and again how little they value communication with its authors, on occasions much more important than this one.

A month ago we were in the middle of what's probably the most popular contest on the site. Right now we're in the interim period before the Halloween, with maybe one author event going on. It's a quiet season.

Tackle the ball not the player.

Or, on the bright side, perhaps Laurel enjoys reading well-written stories by her favorite well established authors? And is taking her time.

Conflict arises when expectation and performance do not match. I'd suggest that, since we can't do anything about performance, we decide to do a better job of managing our expectations.

There are documented procedures for dealing with stories that seem to be stuck. Beyond following those, all we can do is be patient. Unless, of course, you get off on being all pissy about things you can't control. Is there a category for that, or would it just go in Fetish?

Publishing stories can be like waiting for a bus or being stuck at the traffic lights. It will happen when it happens.

That's an exceptional rude take on the situation. EDIT: let me elaborate -- I don't understand what about this post resulted in you making personal attacks against others, even if you named no names.

Its not a personal attack, its the truth. People come here often with this issue and many times the attitude here from some people devolves into they should basically shut up and deal with it.

But when it's their turn to have to deal with this, now it's a concern.

Good example of what comes around goes around.

Fact is, it is a serious issue that's been going on for far too long with no attempt to even address it here, let alone fix it and that's not acceptable in my eyes. But others think it's a joke, until they're on the wrong end of the punchline.

How's it feel?

Today alone there are in the neighborhood of 260+ new stories published. So they are not on vacation. I just want to know why my latest submission has been 'pending' for 32 days, while all these folks slide on through with no issue. If there's an issue with my story, REJECT IT WITH COMMENTS I CAN ADDRESS.

I do not see anybody complaining. I see concern, for Laurel and Manu as individuals and for the well-being of the site that occupies a large place in some people's lives.

@EmilyMiller shared some information that many posters here would not know, if they do not frequent BlueSky. Information that seems to have bearing on the situation, and that triggered her concern.
