The picture above is from my third grade daughter’s math book. This is the only page that explains that method for subtraction. There are, for the record, four ways to subtract that my third grader must learn.

This is the only page explaining that method. This is the only example. The very next page goes to arrays. The page after that goes to multiplication. This is it.

The traditional method of subtracting, borrowing and carrying numbers, is derisively called the “Granny Method.” The new method makes no freaking sense to either my third grader or my wife.

We send our child to a Christian private school. We thought our child could escape this madness. But standardized tests, the SAT, and the ACT are all moving over to Common Core. So our child has to learn this insanity. But we cannot help her. The book offers only one example.

This reads like my daughter's Science Chemistry class. One example, a bunch of problems and then on to another topic. She has to spend most of her homework time on the Internet trying to figure out what is being asked and how it is supposed to be answered. The problem is, most of Science isn't Common Core yet.

That's not actually teaching the concept of "subtraction". It's subtraction by addition; like leading from behind.

Of course, every year we have to go out and buy a specific calculator for each class, so I really wonder what the thought process is there.

Its useful to remember educrats gotta justify their pay and federal grants. They reinvent wheels and fire. They were pushing NEW MATH 40 years ago when I was in college.

I helped my kids with the math I was learning at college then, and their teachers howled how I was doing it wrong. But it wasn't wrong it was traditional, same as I studied in high school in the 60s.

The whole deal is a scam and a waste of effort.

I've said this before when someone else- it may have been Julybaby- posted an example of common core mathematics and complained that they found it too complicated for young kids.

From the examples I seen posted in threads on Lit so far I have yet to see cause for concern.

Word problems and 'unique' equations for positive and negative numbers....very confusing, to the point that the teacher can't even explain how to figure it out.

Some must perform with pencil or chalk in hand, some perform to verbal commands, some look at the problem before they can perform. Our brains process differently. Common Core is anathema to most conservatives, as it teaches students HOW to think, how to reason things out. Thinking is strictly verboten in the conservative mindset, which places a premium on rote knowledge.

There IS a place for rote knowledge in math (multiplication tables come to mind), but the problem arises in the advanced math functions, where you have to do some actual thinkifying.

The common core folks want the reasoning and thinking skillz taught early on, which gives ammunition to the EDUCATION BAD folks like the Chief. If you don't teach reasoning early, the transition to higher math concepts is more difficult.

It wasn't really complicated, IMO.
It's not how I subtract, but it's a straight forward process and easily understood by most people I'm sure, when approached with an open mind.

Depends on the math operation. I excel at geometry, statistics, and logic. Like, when I write computer instructions I use logical operations rather than quantitative operations. I cant visualize numbers but I can form 3 dimensional models in my head from 2 dimensional patterns. Statistics is estimation.

And you whiffed on the last paragraph. 4est's kid goes to a private school and uses four methods - which isn't a terrible idea. Public school kids? From what I understand, they're stuck with the bullshit method.

Hmmm, if the WRONG answer is acceptable as long as the right procedure is used then it stands to reason that the RIGHT answer is acceptable even if the non-officially accepted method is used.
