The picture above is from my third grade daughter’s math book. This is the only page that explains that method for subtraction. There are, for the record, four ways to subtract that my third grader must learn.

This is the only page explaining that method. This is the only example. The very next page goes to arrays. The page after that goes to multiplication. This is it.

The traditional method of subtracting, borrowing and carrying numbers, is derisively called the “Granny Method.” The new method makes no freaking sense to either my third grader or my wife.

We send our child to a Christian private school. We thought our child could escape this madness. But standardized tests, the SAT, and the ACT are all moving over to Common Core. So our child has to learn this insanity. But we cannot help her. The book offers only one example.

This reads like my daughter's Science Chemistry class. One example, a bunch of problems and then on to another topic. She has to spend most of her homework time on the Internet trying to figure out what is being asked and how it is supposed to be answered. The problem is, most of Science isn't Common Core yet.

This is very confusing and it makes a simple operation much more difficult.

That's not actually teaching the concept of "subtraction". It's subtraction by addition; like leading from behind.

That falls under the rubric of "teaching them to think."

Of course, every year we have to go out and buy a specific calculator for each class, so I really wonder what the thought process is there.

Knowing how to enter the question?

Its useful to remember educrats gotta justify their pay and federal grants. They reinvent wheels and fire. They were pushing NEW MATH 40 years ago when I was in college.

I helped my kids with the math I was learning at college then, and their teachers howled how I was doing it wrong. But it wasn't wrong it was traditional, same as I studied in high school in the 60s.

The whole deal is a scam and a waste of effort.

If you all weren't so dead against common core, you'd notice that the method being taught is how we perform subtractions in our head. Following this technique does not require the use of paper and pencil and is of more practical use.

I've said this before when someone else- it may have been Julybaby- posted an example of common core mathematics and complained that they found it too complicated for young kids.

From the examples I seen posted in threads on Lit so far I have yet to see cause for concern.

My child is in sixth grade honors, and it gets worse!
Word problems and 'unique' equations for positive and negative numbers....very confusing, to the point that the teacher can't even explain how to figure it out.

But we cannot help her. The book offers only one example.
They obviously aren't a very bright couple if they can't see how it's done with just the one example.
Which is unfortunate for their daughter.

Dear Isis Terrorista

I usta evaluate kiddies with math problems. Few of them perform or understand math operations the same. Some must perform with pencil or chalk in hand, some perform to verbal commands, some look at the problem before they can perform. Our brains process differently. That is, teachers are often out of rapport with their pupils. Kids are visual learners, kids are aural learners, and kids are hands-on learners.

Common Core is anathema to most conservatives, as it teaches students HOW to think, how to reason things out. Thinking is strictly verboten in the conservative mindset, which places a premium on rote knowledge.

There IS a place for rote knowledge in math (multiplication tables come to mind), but the problem arises in the advanced math functions, where you have to do some actual thinkifying.

The common core folks want the reasoning and thinking skillz taught early on, which gives ammunition to the EDUCATION BAD folks like the Chief. If you don't teach reasoning early, the transition to higher math concepts is more difficult.

As a specialist I'm sure you must know that the VAK learning theory no longer holds water. The fact is everyone uses multiple learning styles- they may favour one over the other but never exclusively so.

Tell me JBJ, ever across illiterate people who cannot read or write and yet manage to keep count/accounts?

You still wanna stick to your argument?

VAK works fine.

As for your proposition I know dogs that count well and know time. Animals excel at navigation. Much of what we learn confuses us. I often win bean counting contests.

Your claim is absurd.

So you agree with me that one reading and writing are not essential to maths.

The example shown in the OP only appears complicated because we are reading it, it wouldn't be the same when demonstrated.

I was taught the traditional method so I need to visualise numbers being carried forward etc which can get pretty confusing when you're dealing with 4 or 5 digit numbers but not when you use this method.

It wasn't really complicated, IMO.
It's not how I subtract, but it's a straight forward process and easily understood by most people I'm sure, when approached with an open mind.

Depends on the math operation. I excel at geometry, statistics, and logic. Like, when I write computer instructions I use logical operations rather than quantitative operations. I cant visualize numbers but I can form 3 dimensional models in my head from 2 dimensional patterns. Statistics is estimation.

I was a whiz at math growing up. I do math for a living. I learned from the usual method. I think that expecting kids to learn by this method - and ONLY this method - is the stupidest fucking shit I've ever seen.

You may be a whiz at math, but reading comprehension appears to elude you.

If you read the original post, the chief's copy-n-paste indicated that this was one of four methods about subtraction that they teach.

And you whiffed on the last paragraph. 4est's kid goes to a private school and uses four methods - which isn't a terrible idea. Public school kids? From what I understand, they're stuck with the bullshit method.

It is a fairly simple method ,but the main failing is that it adds extra steps and more chances of error IMHO .

Hmmm, if the WRONG answer is acceptable as long as the right procedure is used then it stands to reason that the RIGHT answer is acceptable even if the non-officially accepted method is used. :D
