Comments that leave you shaking your head

I was reading through comments made on Youtube on a stolen story of mine (there's a thread about the theft issue). The few comments are similar to those received from readers here (except with complaints about formatting issues and missing text), but one thing jumped out:

"as story goes, this one is excellent (and part 1 as well). If it is AI created story then it is on completely different level than AI stories I listend to on other channels"

"...it does not have the robotics and feel of AI generated stories"

I'm not exactly puffing my chest out at being told that I can write better than AI - there are billions of people out there who can write better than AI. But I'm gobsmacked that there are people out there who would listen to AI-generated erotica!

As the newbie, here, it's not any single comment that makes me shake my head. It's a particular class of comment in LW. Those who say they hated the story, and add personal insults to the author. They generally talk about how early into the story they realized they hated it. Then go on to show they read the entire story. Why would they continue reading something they already know they don't like? Why would they hang out in a section of the site they claim to hate with such bitterness? And it isn't just Anonymous commenters! Some folks with screen names do the same thing. I've had Anonymous commenters make valid points of criticism, as worthwhile as anyone else's. So it isn't just an "anonymous thing," or even an anonymous thing at all! Many Anonymous commenters are awesome.

These haters act like you're going to go over to their house and make them read your stories. As if they fear laws will be passed demanding they read things they hate. It's as if they hate cheating spouse stories just for existing. That stories of cheaters actively harm their world, harshing their reality, as if each and every one of them was aimed directly at them, at a personal level. What the Hell, man? Guys? It's a website. You can disengage anytime you like. Did no one explain that to these people? It's the freaking internet. No one but them is making them stay and read something they hate. Just click the button on the mouse!

Here's one example: I do not like scat and piss play stories. So I don't read them. See how easy that is? And also this: if I did read one, like it or dislike it, personally, I can still offer constructive criticism on the story, the writing, the characters, etc. I don't go insulting those who do write and read those stories.

If I was 50 years younger, still studying psychology, I could have written several papers on this phenomenon. There's a pathology there, I'm certain. Just not one interesting enough for me to explore at this point in my life.

It has given me inspiration for a story, though. I've read enough of them to see what their standard tropes are.

I follow my own advice. I'll read a comment and the instant it gets to "blind hatred just because it exists," or personal insults, I stop reading it. It's that easy to go and find something else we do like to spend the rest of our very short lives on.

I'm almost tempted to disable comments, but for the value of those offering actual criticism.

The part that is really funny are the ones who imply, or flat-out state that I, personally, am destroying Western Civilization (though they don't usually state it that clearly. I try to help them be more precise with their language. Hasn't worked; nonetheless, I persevere.). Me? Seriously? I'm an old woman writing niche stories on a website. I never knew how much incredible power I possessed over all of society!

I once started reading a forced gender transformation story that I hated. I didn't realized when I opened it up and started reading what it was, and by the time I did it was like watching a car crash in slow motion. I didn't want to watch it, I'd really rather go read anything else, but somehow I find myself compulsively hitting the next chapter button and continuing to read. It took me around ten long chapters to finally pull myself away and find something to scrub it out of my brain with.

Difference is, I didn't leave long detailed comments on how they were an awful person for posting such a thing, and I didn't down rate it. If anything I gave every chapter I did read five stars because it was that well written. But the story itself was the opposite of my thing, and yet it was hard to disengage.

Ask yourself if you really want to delete comments. I keep all mine and some of them are terrible. Even my better stories often get comments that tell me I ought to kill myself, or quit writing or sign myself into therapy. I use them to remind myself you can;t please everyone. I seriously question any story that has only glowing comments. Especially after a period of time, and the score is below like 4.9

Some begin to read and if they get uncomfortable disengage and comment. Most look later and see the story is getting a decent rating and go back to figure out why. They read the story and find they like it. I read stories often because I recognized the author knowing he was getting low scoring. Sometimes, that is justified. The author missed the mark in one of several ways. More often, it was because he put a few things in that bothered the reader enough to give it a low score. Sometimes, I agree, the story this time was not good.

I don't think that readers have a divine right to abuse others and expect to be covered under 'free speech', and I particularly don't want an environment where other readers are afraid of commenting because they see others getting abused without consequence.

That still leaves plenty of scope for people to write 'interesting' comments that get left alone. Here's a fun example:

10 Big Blazing Stars, for writing an interesting story. But if my wife was in another guys room at a hotel without prior approval it would be automatic divorce. She comes back to the room all "flustered"??? LOL she was fucking probably! I'd leave her there in the foreign country and come home and divorce her. What a slut! I tell her "In what world are you living in that makes it 'OK' to let another man take you shopping and then return to his room to try everything on for him. Take me there now so I can shoot him or at the very least beat the fuck out of him for fucking my wife! YOU FUCKING LOWLIFE POS SLUT1" That is how I would handle it. Thanks

Yes, we need the money for our own therapy after going through that turmoil again and again...

My first story was in L/W and it received lot of negative attention... some were absolutely brutal... I neither respond to comments (both positive and negative) nor deleted them. You can still read all the abusive comments right there...

Some of the comments just don't make sense... like the first story is about a man finding his balance in life after bad divorce and heartbreak... how the fuck that makes me a manhater? I guess some readers respond to stories like they are absolute truths.

You deleting the comment is somehow empowering to these trolls... I have seen some other commenters defending my story or countering the abusive comments and I think that's the only thing you can hope for.

A while back (several years ago, now that I think about it) I had a friend who was on Lit. She was the one who told me of it's existence. She published some stories, things were going great, then she crossed that line into LW. Overnight her ratings on all her stories plummeted. Nasty, vile comments started filling her email inbox. She left Literotica shortly after that because of the LW haters.

So I knew, going in that LW was a tough room. I work in a completely different industry than she does, and you have to have a thick skin so it doesn't bother me as much as it did her. Even so, I was surprised at the level of brain-death exhibited by some of the LW-haters.

I would still suggest dont disable voting and comments. L/W Ratings are almost a point lower than any category so I dont take them to heart. Comments though, I love the feedback.

If trolls bother you too much, you can keep deleting them but there are some good readers who leave beautiful comments that make you take the dive again.

Just my personal opinion but yes, do what works best for you

I decided to kill that story. With some good advice from several folks, I realized I was doing exactly what the LW-haters do: continuing to engage in something I know I don't like. And then I wrote a story I would never want to read because of that. I was going in the wrong direction on this. So I withdrew it.
