Are there really that many mean people here? I've seen a few arguments in threads but nothing really bad. Maybe I'm being a naive newbie.
I have anon comments on because I'll be wanting as much input as I can get once I start posting stories. Good or bad, I want input.
Definitely accept anon comments. Lots of people comment anonymously for their own reasons. It's none of my business why they do. You'll miss some good ones if you turn it off.
My most recent LW story got 32 comments so far (I don't get a lot). Here's how they broke down:
Anonymous: 15 comments
Lit authors: 7 comments
All of the anon comments were valid opinions, even if they had little to say. Some admitted they 1-bombed it. Whatever. It's one of the 5 choices readers have.
One anon comment was 2200 words long! The story was only 2900 words.
All three groups had at least one comment that was useful enough to me that I would consider it on a rewrite, and for similar stories in the future.
Overall, I consistently get more useful comments in LW, and certainly more interesting and entertaining ones. Take whatever you can get.
Scoring is a different matter. It is completely irrelevant for any practical purpose.
