I wasn't terribly impressed with your ill phrased essay on literary
correctness. You don't live in a glass house do you?
Repair your own problems before you condemn others.

Grow up and get a little education as you work on your pitifully

I have no idea what this is supposed to address, but I'd bet it was for the screed I wrote about people who couldn't write.

We all get crap like this, I'm sure. The only reason I posted it here was to invite the author to discuss her complaints out in open forum. I won't hold my breath.

Nasty email is never nice - but how do you know it was a "her"?

How 'bout this one? I just started a new series about a professional killer hired by a wealthy man to kill his young, sexy, but promiscous wife. Nasty stuff, sure, but I'm hardly the only person out there writing a story about a hit man. "Sopranos", anyone?

So, I check my e-mail and find this waiting for me:

"Hit man" is the wrong term. You mean cowardly murderer. (Just to be on the safe side, I've forwarded your computer information to the FBI.
You seem to want to be a cowardly criminal.)

Now, I don't think this person forwarded jack to the Feds, nor do I think the FBI would be interested in busting the author of such a pedestrian piece of obvious fiction. Still, it gave me about ten seconds of "Ohhhhh shit!"

I rather pity the person who wrote this note. I guess that they lack the mental capacity required to tell fact from fiction, fantasy from reality. Rather interferes with one's ability to enjoy life.

Kristdoll,

I was waiting for someone to call me on this! I don't know the person's sex for sure, but the first few sentences just sound like a woman's scolding. That "glass houses" thing is straight from my mother's arsenal, as is the infamous "No one likes a smart ass".

And then I just have never heard a man call another man "immature", no matter what kind of idiocy the other guy's engaged in. "Immature" is a term used by women to describe men's behavior. A man would call another man an asshole.

Anonymous really is an unpleasent one. I've been critizised by him too.
That rude coward.

In American English that is true. However, when I read the original comments it struck me that it read as English, not as American ("smartass" not withstanding). A male English commenter might well use the word "immature" of another man where he would not use the word "asshole"; the English translation of the American "asshole" is "cunt" in terms of usage and implication. For example: if another (male) driver cuts me up in traffic I mutter "cunt" under my breath where an American mutters "asshole".

*smiles* - wasn't really calling you on it - just jumped out at me. And I am a woman, so that happens...lol.

But maybe anonymous was trying to be "literary correct". Who knows - I am not defending him/her - it was still rude.

Since books like the Turner Diaries, which advocates race war to overthrow the federal government, among other things, are protected speech, I'm pretty sure you don't have to retain Larry Flynt's lawyer just yet. If they even cared about fictional killers that have sex, the FBI would have to bust all the people that wrote screenplays for James Bond for starters before they could get around to you anyway, lol.

The person that wrote that is going to have an awfully sore mouse finger if he intends to forward every story on this site that people might find offensive or immoral. As for inciting people to go out and cause non-fictional harm to other people, the NY Times has posted George W's 25 people it's okay to assassinate list. Should we forward that to the FBI?

I would take it as a compliment that your story got a rise out of someone one way or another.

I've never gotten any of the scathing e-mails people always talk about here. The worst I've recieved is "uh, I didn't like your story", with no explanation why.

But remember the old saying: "Those who can do; those who can't send moronic e-mails."

well, it wasn't me. i never say 'smartass' it's too much of an american spelling joke to me - donkeys are thick. i always say 'smart arse'. so now you know.

i wish it had been a story, i so love reading stories that get crazy feedbacks. still, at the very least they could have helped more by stating exactly what it was that riled them so much to send you this feedback.

i wouldn't guarantee it's a woman either, although it might be worth considering it really was your mother ;)

(pity about the 'go piss up a rope' bit... is that an american saying too? sounds like you stooped to their level by adding it. you'd have done better to leave that off)

Beg to disagree

Dr.

I'd say you're somewhat American-preoccupied here. I can really hear a stiff-upperlip Brit say this to you, so I wouldn't be too sure about the "her".

Paul

It's definitely not a stiff-upper lip Brit. I have a posh voice and I'm English, so technically come under that qualification. No Englishman worth his condiment uses 'ass' over 'arse.'

I'm a bloke and I call people immature. Well the word I use is more often 'puerile'. It's so entertaining to watch neanderthal idiots' brains overheat as they try and work out how they're being insulted.

Is it? I always thought an asshole was an arsehole and a cunt was a different kettle of fish altogether.

I think our friend from across the pond means that the usage of the words is roughly equivalent, not the definition

A Brit might say "Some cunt cut me off in traffic."

Whereas your American might say "Some asshole cut me off in traffic."

And then the angry Brit would drink warm beer and think about rioting in Belgium, whereas the angry American would probably be busy hiding the gun. (Hint: Don't hide it under your other guns, that's probably the first place they'll look)

Really this is too much. I have to respond to such a sweeping and defamatory comment about us English. There are still many of us who have had a proper education and would never resort to such language whatever the provocation.
Were such a situation to occur, bearing in mind that most of the time our traffic is stationary, an English gentleman would say,

"Some cunt cut me up in traffic."

I prefer to use bastard for everyday use, with the occasional fuck thrown in for good measure. :)

That way i get to save cunt for those really special moments.

It's a question of usage and geographical area. I personally would say 'Some tit cut me up in traffic' as I don't like saying 'cunt,' but it is the closest translation of the Yank asshole. Arsehole is something completely different. :D
