We may enjoy our gourmet foods, but we'll go back to
our fave "comfort food" from time to time......

Vote n' post a reply here why you picked that particular

My grandmother used to make this delicious chocolate cake with Hershey Cocoa Powder. I believe the recipe is still on the container, too.

She used to sprinkle powdered sugar on top of the cake when it was cooled and then add chopped walnuts on top of that.

When the weather was very cold, this is what we came home from school to. It was the nicest treat we could ever imagine. And, she used to have some hot tea ready for us, too, with milk and a little bit of sugar.

I can still remember those days with fondness.

Tomato(e) soup made with whole milk. And a big fat juicy burger with lots of ketchup!

I can remember my grandmom making me this when I was just a little one. She was not a good cook over all, but she could make this!

It's gotta be Mac n' cheese for me.....heehee.......esp. if
its *homemade*! I've made the homemade version for
my residents at the group home I work at, and some of
them come back for 2nds and 3rds!!!

If push comes to shove, then I enjoy the mac n' cheese
from the box....by Annie's.....really yummy....and Kraft
of course.....a fave when i was a tot :)

Hi Jen!

I said chocolate cake, but I think the ultimate comfort food is brownies.

Oatmeal cookies are another.

Oreos & Graham crackers are my Nabisco favorites. With milk, of course. They all tie in to the happy part of my childhood, when the family was together. :)

One of my favorite comfort foods is good old chocolate pecan cheesecake. That always makes me feel good :) Of course, anything with chocolate makes me think I can take on the world ;)

Its always mac and cheese for me... now whenever something bad happens to me my best friend shows up at the door with a box of pasta, a block of cheese, milk and a bottle of tequila for after.

Wow.....already......lots of people here enjoying many
different faves.........noticing trend stems from childhood :)

*singing the Oreo cookie song*

Finest way to start your day.

Good old eggs and bacon.

Sets me up a treat!

I love scrambled eggs with bacon that is really
crispy (and all the fat drained out!)......w/ toast! :)

Who can go wrong w/ a nice hot bowl of tomato soup?
With whole milk..........oh my!
(and oh my to the arteries!)

Ah yes......I crave a nice burger once in a blue moon....
yummy!!!!

Homemade rappie pie - apologies to non-Acadie who have no idea what I'm talking about, but it's hard to explain without boring everyone with the whole recipe. When I'm not even up to cooking, then it has to be KD: the comfort food of last resort.

With or without nuts?

I prefer them without......

And oatmeal cookies.......

Oreo cookies.......do you lick out the creamy middle first
or eat the whole thing at once? ;) Graham crackers always
nice....esp. w/ s'mores!

Who can go wrong with "cookies n' milk"? :)

What once were comfort foods are becoming gourmet foods. I work in the catering business and I see it more and more, people who once wanted beef welington and oysters rockefeller for their affairs are leaning more and more towards roast beef and fried chicken.
My theory is that so many young people are growing up without learning to cook, and then living in relationships where both partners work full time, that the old family standbys: meat loaf, homemade mac and cheese. etc. are becoming exotic to them, as they have neither the time nor the knowledge to prepare them.

If I've got it on hand, Ben & Jerry's chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Yummy!
But my mom makes a killer coffee cake, that's what I'd come home to.
Now there is this lady that runs the bakery at the store that makes a cake when it's someone's birthday, it's always chocolate with carmel in it, which makes it really moist and then she does this whip cream frosting and sprinkles chopped up Heath bars on it. Wish I could figure out how she did it because I tried it and mine doesn't come out anything like hers!

Very good point here!

I forgot to put fried chicken in my poll.....ah well! :)
I wouldn't be surprised if more foods such as fried chicken are
being served at diff. affairs instead of oysters and caviar....perhaps
it reflects the economy? I'm not in the catering business to know....
would love to hear your opinion!

I seriously learned to "cook-cook" at the group home where I work
at......that's one of my duties there.......there is the lovely invention
known as the cookbook that people can follow if they want to make
something homemade, but I understand with the home situations
in these times, with both parents working and kids running off
to diff. activities and school-related stuff....no time to cook.....but
that doesn't mean that kids (i'm using this as an example) should
be having fast food and pizza every night of the week. Make a "chef
salad"....lean coldcuts, veggies.......with some crusty French bread....
or quesadillas in the microwave (tortilla, cheese, veggies, chicken)......
Finding healthy meals takes a bit of practice.......

Of course, when I cook, I improvise, or if I don't have enough meat
for a dish, I throw in more vegetables to give the dish "bulk".

Hot spicy chili nachos. Just make me feel all warm and relaxed!

Chocolate chip cookie dough....

Ever have chocolate chip cookie dough right from the
wrapper? :) That was the cool thing to do back in
college.......sugar rush!!!!!!!

I love cookie dough ice cream......so yummy......

Ben & Jerry's rocks!

1) Hors d'oevres: doritos with spicy salsa or hummus
2) Starter: maccaroni & cheese
3) Main Course: Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Chicken
4) Dessert: Chocolate Fudge Cake

....that's what I call a comfort meal.

Halo :rose:

For comfort, I like Betty Crocker mix with no nuts,

If I'm baking for flavor, I make them from scratch, with almonds & almond extract, OR with hazelnuts in the mix & Nutella as frosting!:p

I used to open oreos, now I prefer them intact, but softened in milk. My favorite way to eat them is in a tall glass with Bryer's vanilla ice cream & a little milk in it , with a spoon.:D

a garden picked salad with fresh ripe tomatoes
home made french fries ( a lot)
steak
wine
a secret fruit salade : the fruits macerate in their juices and Porto, to be served with 2 or more spoonful of sweetened whip cream
