No, this isn't a plug for my story of the same name (Praeteritio is such an ugly word :D), but more a question of what comfort foods you turn to. This is vaguely writerly researchy. Honest.

I'm currently going with the classic whipped cream straight out of the can. Seems a bit of a waste when there's no-one to lick it off.

Apples in the fall. (Very Agatha Christie of me, I know.)

Pumpkin pie with tons of cream in fall and winter.

Food that takes a while to make, that I only make on special occasions, like a whole baked ham or lamb chops.

Those are good to start off with.

Rocky road ice cream (with or without a licker) ... for anger.

Cheese (warm & melted & gooey) ... for hurt/loneliness.

Hot tea ... for a sore throat.

A thick Porterhouse steak (grilled, rare) ... for fatigue.

Chocolate-covered cherries (with the stems attached) ... for desire.

chocolate, I am a woman after all *L* but bars of chocolate so dairy milk, galaxy, stuff like that. none of this chocolate and added wafer/flavour/caramel bollocks, just chocolate :)

Bread works well, so white bead toast or white bread rolls.. Pasta but in a cheesy, creamy sauce,or mashed potato is another good one. See the link there? *grins*

Potato hash (or hotpot as I call it) is comfort in a bowl, even better if made by my Nanna :)

yes, lots of foods comfort me really *L*

IMHO, comfort foods for most people are generally gooey and decadent, either being sweet (e.g., ice cream) or savory (e.g., mashed potatoes). most of my comfort foods are of the savory variety: lasagne, a really good chili, most soups, etc.

Something hot and "gloopy," to use the SO's and I agreed-upon word. Hot stew over mashed potatoes. Mother's colcannon. Or possibly a good lamb curry over rice.

That's for fatigue, exhaustion, sorrow, etc. For what I've got at the moment - whacking great swathes of unrelenting work - it's junk food all the way. I'm surrounded in chips, pretzels, ice cream, chocolate, and soda, all designed as bribes to keep me going.

Chocolate chip cookie dough. When I'm feeling really down, I'll buy a roll of it at the store and eat it with a spoon. Luckily, that doesn't happen very often!

Ben and Jerry's 2 Twisted Half Baked Ice Cream (choc chip cookie dough and choc fudge brownie, mixed together)

Homemade french fries.

Fresh bread.

What Mom calls Mulligan stew, which is tomatoes, corned beef, sugar, onions stewed down a mite & served on toast.

Yankee Pot Roast

Crystallized ginger

Boiled Dinner: smoked pork shoulder, potatoes, carrots, onions, yellow turnip, green cabbage.

Henry McKenna bourbon, on ice. Drink only after some of the ice has begun to melt.

Can? I can whip my own thankyouverymuch.

My comfort food for the moment is marinared garlic. Not very good for the social life though.

liar: hey, not everyone keeps whipping cream and a good whisk handy... :>

See, now whipped cream as comfort food is one of the few areas where processed is better. The idea is of the childish decadence you get from squirting it directly into your mouth and filling your gob with cream. The can is essential.

Just about anything that cooks for hours and fills the house with an aroma that makes you salivate the whole damned afternoon - stew, bolognese sauce, chilli, soup.

Or you can leave out the cream and just inhale the nitrous oxide (he-he-he).

Fried Chicken.

Mom's hot biscuts with butter & muscadine jelly.

Steaks cooked on the grill by dad, with Texas toast and a baked tater.

Lemon cookies & Chocolate milk, for when I am down.

Oh, but it's SOOOOOOOOOOOO good. You can flavor/sweeten it any way you choose. I buy the sugar-free DaVinci syrups ... toasted marshmallow is my current favorite ... and go to town!

Comfort foods
Mom's Corn Chowder
Cabbage Burgers ( not what you are thinking)
Great grama's devil's food cake
Tamale Pie

Summer: Ice Cream. My favorites are Mint Chocolate Chip and White Chocolate Raspberry.

Winter: Creamy Soups, such as New England Clam Chowder or Mushroom Bisque with Bacon.

Chunks of cheese. Real cheese, that is.
Not the crappy stuff that gets exported.
Excellent combination with Cant's crystalized ginger. Yum.

Nuts are good too, macademias or pistachios, or roasted almonds.

If it's really bad I need chocolate, preferably black and almost bitter.
Close to a whole box at a time.
