I have heard the evolutionary argument. It makes sense - procreation, strongest mate, only one kid at a time, etc.

However, the biggest factor for women over time is the fact that if they are truly open they are likely to encounter male violence (i.e. India or Egypt etc today). So when men put forward that argument and use it as the case for continuation of the trend (not saying you are doing that) they tend to overlook the fact that they are one of the biggest factors in the evolution of women's status.
