Hey all.

I've been working with a story today and I noticed how much detail I provide in describing colors. Particularly in clothing, but overall in my works. I was wondering how important it is to you guys, as an author, to try and make sure the reader is seing the scene you are painting in the same way you are?

Do you strive to have them see burgandy rather than red? Or is that level of detail too much trouble to go into for scant reward?

No, you can never describe enough color. Like you said, you are painting a picture. I'm big on color......except for pink.

Waaay more than it's worth. I like to leave lots of wiggle room in my descriptions- and then people tell me how well I've described things, how well they can see it all :)

How about fuchsia Abs?

Colly, I think it's about how often you do it. If your works are filled with too much of teal or chartreuse, that's just a bit distracting to me as a reader.

Apart from that, I'm big on glimpses, not giving away the whole scene in detail, so you can take that as you like.

Unless a color is central to my story I do not describe color other than the simple basic colors.

Color, moreso than many other descriptors, carries emotional weight -- so I'd be more likely to mention shades of color.

In fact, in the piece I'm working on with Bel now, the female lead is an artist. I've used crimson, cherry, aubergine, chocolate ... and anticipate using many more.

Other scene descriptors aren't critical to me unless they help set the mood.

If it's relevant, I mention the colors of skin, hair, etc. I never describe the surroundings, unless it furthers the story. I might say "She moved the comfortor out of the way and lay on top of the sheet." I would not mention the color of the comfortor or sheet because they are not relevant. I sometimes describe the color of clothing, but usually it is not relevant. Except for bluejeans, sometimes.

I prefer magenta.

You spelt 'colours' wrong. ;)

Seriously, I've been positively commented on my descriptions. So I must be doing it all right.

I don't usually use much in the way of fancy colours though. Blue, white, grey and black. Occasionally something brighter like red or yellow.

I have no idea what fuchsia is. Or even how to pronounce it.

What?

anything like ROYGBIV?

Colly, I don't use color descriptors all that much. In fact, can't think of a single instance when I try.

Maybe I need to....

Care to translate or do you want to buy a vowel?

Sorry ... stream of consciousness thing ...

Magenta > Rocky Horror > LTBTRT (re the statue - Left Tit Bigger Than Right Tit)
