Oregon did not "remove" reading or math requirements, they just opted not to require passing a standardized test (which does pose a disadvantage to students whose native language is not English). There are still coursework requirements in math and English.

I'm neither, I'm just seeing the news from the UK side, so if there isn't that, then it's being misreported over here. Mind you, that doesn't surprise me because a lot of Americans have a good impression about Blair when neither side liked him, he was just a populist vehicle for his wife.

Not wanting to derail this topic - Blair was not good for us. Not least he led us into an illegal war in Iraq because he wanted to kiss Bush's backside, but he changed policies that led to our very good immigration policy with a steady, controlled influx down the decades (Windrush generation, etc.) becoming a free-for-all and leaving us with a housing crisis, mass people smuggling, etc. as well as opening us up and leaving us more exposed to most as part of the financial crisis of 2008. Granted Brown was in charge by that point but he had already overseen the policy introductions that made us more vulnerable.

Back on topic, if this generally isn't a shitstorm, is the reporting polarised in the US like it is in the UK with newspapers and news channels being opinion pieces rather than information points? I tend to read both sides and a more independent source or two to try and get nearer the truth as we seem well off what we should be as a country.
