Color-blind, Color-tolerant, Color-driven?

In another thread (one that go to the wasteland at anytime, which is why I am doing this here)...I made a statement about how Americans are more racially obsessed than it appears Canadians are.

I have every birthright in the world to say whatever I want about the American people because I AM American. I was born and raised there for half my life. All my relatives still live in the states except for my mother and myself, who live in Canada.

I have had MANY arguments with relatives over their perceptions of people of non-white heritage. My grandfather is a diehard racist...so bad, that when my husband and I were planning to adopt a baby...I had been told that if I adopted any child of anything but white descent, I would be banned from the family. THAT pissed me off.

As far as I am concerned...a person is a person NO MATTER what their race is. I am NOT racially driven in any way whatsoever.

For me...what makes me dislike a person is NOT the colour of their skin, but rather their treatment of others. I am going to receive my Canadian citizenship this year but still stay American as well. That will not change my views on prejudice.

So I consider myself to be color(race)-tolerant. What about you? And why do you feel that way?

I knew there was someone with a brain around here that wasn't all bent out of shape about race.

psst....to you racial-obsessed Americans...the people in Canada don't give a shit if you are purple or black or green...we really don't. But if you wear a turban...well, then. (THAT IS A JOKE GAWDAMMIT...A JOKE!)

That's actually what you wrote, which has a quite different feel from these much more tolerable words. You also made an obnoxious statement about American's never pointing to the fact that you were one.

edited twice because i'm hungover and can't fucking write today.

While I can't speak for anyone but myself, if you're a dick, you're a dick. If you're a cunt, you're a cunt, no matter the color of your skin. Same applies to those who are good natured :D

You forgot the MOST important part of that WHOLE quote...read the above words yet again!

Are you trying to prompt a discussion or are you trying to save face and get defensive?

I don't doubt that you were joking.

It was tasteless and may be a flimsy cover for the truth, but it also could have been a genuine joke, funny to you.

Perhaps your thread should be about your American relatives' view of the world, and not Americans in general?

Also, seeing as how I have been here so very much longer than you have...I am sorry that you missed the numerous posts that I have made about being American even through my cheering for Canada in the Olympics. That is not something I have ever hidden.

Yes, you have been here so much longer. *clapping for you*

I guess the whole 'colour' and 'favourite' thing threw me.

Sorry for not reading through every thread in which you've ever been involved.

But without being mean, I'm sorry if you were offended by my statement that you never pointed to being American. I wasn't implying that you denied it, rather it sounded to me like you look at American's with distaste.

Hmhh maybe you need to look at how the Canadian gov't treated their indeginious population. They did not do any better then the American gov't did.

They have set up some kind of trust fund for the tribes, to send people to college i think, but thats about it.

How can one not be somewhat race-obsesed these days? I'm not sure how it goes in Canada, but we all have to "check a box" more often than not. We're asked what race we are when we apply for a job, apply for college, apply for various liscenses, even when signing up a kid for elementary school, race somehow becomes a factor (this may be a regional thing). Many official government forms ask for race, even though they say it's only for statistical purposes, it's still there. We are all pigeonholed at one time or another according to our race. Whether we like it or not, this country is race-obsessed.

I, for one have to deal with it on a daily basis. "What are you?" is the question that flies at me from every direction. Daily, I'm asked this by strangers and acquaintences that have known me for a while but have always wondered. At times, it really bothers me, but usually, I take it in stride. It's never meant to be hurtful toward me; and the comments I get in return are most always very pleasant and kind. Apparently, I look rather unique, and some folks are just interested to know what was put in the pot to make the soup that is me. It's just something I deal with every day, but it doesn't consume who I am.

As for me treating anyone differently because of their race, I can't say that I do, but it's possible that I might. I don't look at someone and decide I'm going to treat them differently than I treat others based on their physical features. I generally treat everyone the same, with kindness and respect.

I can honestly say that I'm not at all racist. To me, racists are the ultimate in ignorant people. My best friend is Korean, my ex is from Pakistan and black men are the sexiest beings to walk this world. It makes no difference.

I live in London, which is very mult-racial so to be honest there aren't many close minded people around my area. However, in other parts of England, especially the lower-class communities in the countryside, you do experience more discrimination.

And I couldn't possibly comment on this whole America/Canadian argument....
:D
