College laptops?

I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good laptop for a college student. The one I have now (Dell Inspiron) is good, but it keeps having boot-looping issues. I went to Best Buy for some recommendations, but reviews from people who actually use the laptops would be nice xD

I don't need anything extreme, just enough to handle Microsoft Office and a bunch of college papers/projects. Well...a gaming laptop would be nice too, but that's a different story.

So any recommendations?

I just got a mid price, (400.00) Asus and I'm happy with it. I'll never buy a dell again.

Acer makes a good laptop. In fact when Gateway was still around, Acer made theirs for them.

I'm currently using a Gateway M-1634U. Bought is back in 2009 and it's still going with no problems what so ever.

I wouldn't get a Dell laptop. But I do have two Dell desktops one is 10 years old the other is 3. Haven't had a problem until recently...blown power supply.

What's the budget? What else is important to you? Long battery life? Light to carry?

BTW, I got my Asus on sale on Amazon. I had a bit of a wait though, but I knew that when I bought it, about 2 weeks. It's a better laptop than I could buy locally for less money, they have very good reviews for being built tough if you plan on carrying it around a lot.

They had another brand listed, same basic features, about the same price, but not rated as good, Lenovo I think. Toshiba is another brand I would considder in that price range.

Dell is living off its glory days. They suck.

My work laptop is a Mac.

My play laptop is a Toshiba which is my 2nd one now.

Both are awesome.

I have gone through a lost of Laptops and I would say that both the ones I currently use are the best I ever had.

You can pick up a entry-level windows laptop for about $450.

My wife just bought a Gateway so they're definitely still around (owned by Acer though).

For basic use plus decent gaming I would recommend nothing other than a laptop with an AMD Trinity CPU. They offer excellent gaming for the price and good battery life.

My experience with Toshiba laptops is that yheir high-end stuff is excellent (my current work machine is their ultrathin) and their low-end entry level stuff is clunky, plastic pieces of garbage. Same as Sony Vaios.

I'd go with an Acer/Gateway, Asus or Samsung (are they sold in the US?) if the budget is tight.

HP also makes decent laptops. Depending on your budget, that's going to affect the answers.

With a gaming laptop, I suggest dropping at least eight hundred bucks. Alienware is really popular for gaming laptops. But remember, laptops are NOT "upgradeable", so the money you spend on it will be worthless in about five years when the graphics card in it won't play any of the new games on max settings.

You could be right.

I never bought the low end stuff.

Check with the college, most have deals with Apple, discounts for students.

Laptops can be upgraded.

Most PC are junk after 5 years no matter if it is a laptop or table top.

A decent battery life of at least 5-6 hours would be nice. Weight really isn't an issue. I don't want one of the miniature laptops because then, I have to relearn how to type on it. Budget is around $400. And something with a nice lid would be nice! I had a laptop that I had to prop open the lid, and make it stay that way with duct tape >.< hard times....

Thanks for all of the info, guys! I had an Acer laptop once, but one day I opened the lid and it just popped off. I'll have to post a pic of it xD It looks so bad!

I've learned the hard way that Dell isn't so great >.< one of the reasons being it took me 3 hours on hold just to speak to someone who knew English. I only needed a CD that came with the laptop.

I hear Toshiba is nice  I may have to get one of those. One of my friends say it's a good balance between work and play.

Thanks again for the responses!

Whatever you buy, make sure it has a Literotica filter block, or else there will be no diploma forthcoming! ;)

This one is probably some of the best value for money in that price range. Pentium CPU sounds strange, but this one is new for 2012, dual core and whips the snout out of AMD's competitor at that price.

I've owned two Toshiba Satellite laptops and have been happy with both. My oldest is about 8 years old and trying to play games on it causes it to overheat and shut done but everything else works. It didn't do this when it was newer. My newer one is about 2 years old and handles everything just fine. I'm not a super industrial game player but it works for all the games I want to play on it. Best battery life on the newer on is one to two hours now. I travel with them both and they have been very dependable over the years. $400 is in their price range. In fact that is what I paid for my last one.

Edited to add-

It will handle anything a college student might need for general classes.

I have an insperion I baught in 08. Had no problems. I had an HP before that which was junk. Funny as I had dell desktops and love HP desktops. When I was in school they gave us ibms. The thinkpad was a great laptop. All listed have had power cord issues though.

I just bought an ASUS.
Second one I've owned. The first one finally lost the screen after 4 1/2 years of intense use - it was banged about a bit as I've taken it all round Australia and out to sea several times.

iMac, Macbook and an iPhone.

Got an oldass gateway for windows games I can't git out the system.

Getting an iPad just for the shit of it, cuz I can.
