Colleen Thomas Memorial Thread

I was in a haiku mood and feeling a bit reflective:
Short night seems
longer -- sudden news
that hurts so

Sad evening:
a spring of knowledge
has gone dry

Usual haiku explanations apply, non-syllabic format, inclusion of kigo and kireji; though the latter poem is fairly Western.

I remember her telling another poster how I was well loved and respected on this site (by herself and others). At the time, she was in the middle of a bitter arguement with me that eventually led her to put me on ignore (which made me really sad) but she was still my friend and a consumate lady through it all.

Might have found what I wanted to say. Hope it makes sense.

silence

no greater icon of mankind
than a well spoken word

there are less today
than there was

an outline of syntax
a vacuum almost readable

hangs in the space
between what we say

and what should be
glowing in reply

homo deliberatis
lost a warrior

pick up the sword
do it justice

I've just had an e-mail from Melissa, where she has written down what happened to Colly. I'm copying it here, in its entirety, with no amendments.

Colly and I were getting furniture from he basement and getting things really for the tag sale. We had decided to move into smaller housing so I could retire early. She had walked into the kitchen and she said her back hurt. So I told her to take a shower to help lose up her back because I thought she had pulled a muscle. As I walk into the bathroom to start her shower she said that she felt like someone bunched her in her chest, and her back teeth hurt. I knew then something was wrong so I gave her aspirins and called 911. She laid down and the ambulance came with in a min or two. She was still talking and walked to the ambulance. She was in pain but doing better. I went into the ambulance with her and she was not alone. She had a grand mal seizure and her heart stoped. On the top of the mountain going to the hospital and got the parametric unit. They worked on Colly until we got to the hospital. She got into the hospital and the Dr. worked on her for a while and they called her death at 12:05 PM. She told me she had chest pain at 11:30 am. She was not alone I was with her all the way I stayed with her through it all. I never left her side. I hope this helps all of you get some closer. Please understand that this is very mechanical but that has been the only way to deal with things. God Bless Mel

Mel, thank you for taking the time to tell us this, and for reliving it, merely to ease our grieving.

It is heartwarming to see so many people speak out about someone here. I did not know this author, and I have not read her work, but I will be reading it soon. May Colleen be resting in peace and enjoying the Elysian Fields as much as we are enjoying her memory. :)

Thank you so much for thinking of us, Mel, and sharing that information to help us deal with losing Colly. That you can be so generous with us speaks volumes.

Welcome to Lit. I'm so sorry it couldn't be under better circumstance. :rose:

Gosh, it is just so touching and wonderful to have you here. I'm all choked up. I know that you are a real person and not a symbol, but I must say that your presence here still seems to provide a link to our beloved friend that is very moving. Having said so, I will now endeavor to relate to you as the independent individual that you are. And hope that you enjoy hanging with this crowd of sensitive, clever writerly types and will make a habit of it. Welcome, and welcome again. :cathappy:

I'm pleased that Mel has joined us, both for Colly's sake and for her own. I hope that we are all as good to her as Colly was to us. I know that's ambitious, but it's worth a
shot. She has been very sweet and considerate of our grief, even, as someone else noted, to the point of living through her own painful experience for our benefit and closure. Such a kind person, but then, I could tell that already. It's fitting that Colly's soulmate is evidently a good woman in her own right.

Also, I was thinking of making May 26 a special day to honor and remember Colly on an annual basis. Any thoughts on that?
