I've just heard an interview on radio with Colin Powell.

That is the man who should be President.

He was interviewed by one of our more cutting, probing interviewers, Jeremy Paxman. A man who doesn't let go until he has an answer. His style is a mixture of rudeness, sarcasm and disbelief that you're telling the truth. Jeremy Paxman works on the assumption that no-one tells him the truth and he usually has his guests ("victims") squirming by the end of an interview.

Colin Powel came up trumps. His answers were quick, precise and to the point. There was no hesitation in his voice and no pauses whilst he gathered his thoughts together.

He was sensible in his assessment of the "war" against terrorism, in fact he agreed with me a lot so I'm glad he still comes to Lit:) , but joking apart he was the true professional.

He gave the impression of being a man well on top of his job and someone who would not take any nonsense but at the same time would not rush in where angels fear to tread.

You always know when Jeremy Paxman realises he can't get what he wants from an interviewee, he moves quickly onto the next subject. In this interview he was doing that on practically every question!

America you've got a definite winner there.

yup yup

It's a shame he seems to have too much class to actually run for the office. I haven't liked a single republican president (which, considering the ones that have been in office in my young life isn't saying too much) anyway, the man would have my vote in a heartbeat...

I still think Dan Rather should run. :)

If you mean he's too good to run for office that really is a sad thing for American politics.

Naturally I've seen him around since the Gulf War but last night was the first time I've heard him being interviewed, and by one of our more hawkish interviewers at that.

When I've seen him on TV he has always seemed to be more in charge than Bush. And now I've heard how he conducts himself in a question and answer situation I know it.

There are some people you instinctively know are the right ones for the job. I've got that feeling about Powell as President.

Shit and to think we're all stuck with a lightweight like Bush.

A few years ago Powell WAS going to fun for president but he changed his mind and decided he didn't want that job. Who knows maybe he'll change his mind again and run.

I didn't exactly mean that he's too good to run for office. Though, sadly, he's probably too good of a person to actually get elected.

He was approached to run for office, and when he realized the impact that the media frenzy would have on his family he declined. He's a man of such intense integrity that he's not willing to put his family on the chopping block that is American 'journalism'... and it's too damn bad, because we need a true human being in office instead of the crap we're dealing with now.

As for GW... don't get me started.
