Michael Cohen, facing years in prison for campaign finance violations, specifically, paying at least one woman who had an affair with the con artist to not talk about the affair right before the election, is now asking for his money back.

(CNN) Michael Cohen's shell company, Essential Consultants, filed a status report Friday evening agreeing to tear up the original 2016 agreement with adult film star Stormy Daniels, in which Cohen arranged to pay her $130,000 to stay silent about her alleged affair with President Donald Trump.

"Today, Essential Consultants LLC and Michael Cohen have effectively put an end to the lawsuits filed against them by Stephanie Clifford aka Stormy Daniels," said Brent Blakely, Cohen's lawyer. "The rescission of the Confidential Settlement Agreement will result in Ms. Clifford returning to Essential Consultants the $130,000 she received in consideration, as required by California law."

As a part of the status report, Essential Consultants -- the shell company Cohen set up to make the payment to Daniels -- requested that she pay back the $130,000 she received.

Cohen admitted in August to arranging a nondisclosure agreement with Daniels to buy her silence about her alleged affair with Trump. Cohen pleaded guilty to making an excessive campaign contribution, since the $130,000 payment was made in service of the campaign and exceeded the $2,700 federal limit for campaign donations.

Stormy Daniels attorney, Michael Avenatti, had this to say about the change of heart:

"What they're trying to do is they don't want me to get a chance to depose Michael Cohen and Donald Trump," he added. "This is a hail Mary to try and avoid that, that's my first guess."

"Michael Cohen is playing a game in an attempt to avoid his deposition and that of Mr. Trump," Avenatti said. "He is back to doing Trump's bidding and acting as a fixer."

He added that Daniels will only pay back the money if the court allows Cohen and Trump to be deposed and rules in her favor in the case.

UPDATE

Now it becomes clear why Cohen is doing what he is. The con artist has announced he will not enforce anything from the NDA in exchange for Stormy Daniels dropping the lawsuit against him.

“Mr. Trump does not, and will not, contest Ms. Clifford’s assertion that the settlement agreement was never formed, or in the alternative, should be rescinded,” the filing says. “Moreover, Mr. Trump covenants that he will not bring any action, proceeding or claim against Ms. Clifford to enforce any of the terms of the settlement agreement.”

Trump’s attorney, Charles Harder, asked the judge to remove Trump from the lawsuit, saying her claim against Trump for declaratory relief — a ruling that the NDA is invalid — is now moot.

The reaction from Michael Avenatti, Daniel's attorney, was swift and decisive:

“I have been practicing law for nearly 20 yrs.,” Avenatti wrote. “Never before have I seen a defendant so frightened to be deposed as Donald Trump, especially for a guy that talks so tough. He is desperate and doing all he can to avoid having to answer my questions. He is all hat and no cattle.”

In other words, the con artist is all but begging Daniels not to continue with the lawsuit and has offered up the only thing he can: the NDA he has held over her head for the last few years. "See? There's no NDA so there's no need for the lawsuit to continue. No need for me to go to court and answer your attorney's questions. All done."

The con artist's lies have once again caught up with him and he has folded like the proverbial cheap table.
